Garden Checklist: Mulch can act as insulation
Contributed
The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local gar- deners who wish to keep their greenery, flowers, and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
If you don’t have a fall or winter garden, prepare for spring plant- ing.
Tasks for this time of year include repair- ing damaged spots in cool season and cover- ing with mulch. Keep moist until the new grass seedlings are well established. Warm season lawns like Ber- muda grass will soon be
entering their dormant season, so bare patches should be covered with mulch to discourage winter weeds.
Use spent vegetable plants and summer an- nuals to start a compost pile. When pruning, re- member to divide and thin perennials. When fertilizing, avoid a flush of new growth late in the growing season.
Do not apply fertil- izer to citrus, avocados, or other frost tender plants. If weather is cool enough, plant spring bulbs and annuals. An- nuals: calendula, Can- tebury bell, perennials, dianthus, fortnight lily,
Dietes, Latana. Fruits and vegetables, broccoli and cauliflower.
Trees, shrubs, vines, Berberis, redbud, fringe tree. Enjoy these now, annuals and perenni- als. Fibrous begonia. Bulbs, corms, tubers, cyclamen. Trees, shrubs, vines, beautyberry. Bot- tlebrush. Fruits and veg- etables, garlic, gourds, peaches. Fall colors, Raywood ash, maiden- hair.
Things to ponder. convert remaining to- mato and pepper plants with a garden blanket to extend the harvest season into November. Limit fall vegetable gar-
dens in size to avoid over production.
Plant only the variet- ies that you know you will use and enjoy and that you can share with others.

we were with noticed a campsite. It was intact. As he exited his vehicle, he looked for any signs of life, “Hello! Police department is anyone here!”
No response. The of- ficer later explained, it was likely these camp- ers went to enjoy a day at Shaver Lake just be- fore the fire hit and were evacuated immediately and without warning. These were just a few of my observations that day.
The Creek Fire has burned more than 200,000 acres in Fresno and Madera Counties. There has been some contain- ment but a lot of work still remains.
