Benjamin Yutaka Ogawa
Our beloved Benjamin Yutaka Ogawa passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on June 20, 2020. Ben was born on November 4, 1929 in Sanger, California, where he was raised with his siblings, David, Jonathan, Joseph, Olive, Ruth, Cherry, and Ellen. He attended Round Mountain Elementary school in Sanger and graduated from Sanger High school in 1948. From there he went on to study Agricultural Mechanics at Reedley College. At the age of 21, he served in the U.S. Army, during the Korean War. Following his service, he continued farming with his brother, Jonathan. The brothers grew grapes on the corner of Belmont and Academy Avenue. It was in those very grape elds, where Ben met his future bride, Lucille. They married on March 7, 1959 in Palm Springs, California. They were happily married for 61 years. In 1966 he went to work for William Boos, as a foreman, until he retired at the age of 65. Ben went on to become a self-employed farmer for over 20 years, while also running Ogawa’s Produce Fruit Stand, alongside Lucille.
During his lifetime, Ben was actively involved in his children and grandchildren’s activities such as, the Cub Scouts, Fairmont 4-H Club, and Sanger High FFA. He was also a member of the Nisei Farmers League, Japanese American Veterans Association, and The American Legion.
He enjoyed listening to the song, “Amazing Grace” by LeAnn Rimes, watching Joel Osteen sermons on Sundays, shing, and eating Fresno State corn.
Ben loved his family dearly. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen Carol Ogawa, as well as his brothers, David Ogawa, Jonathan Ogawa, and Joseph Ogawa, and sisters, Olive Hall and Ellen Yagi. He is survived by his wife, his children Diane Flake, and her husband Rick; their children Roy and Ramieka, Tim Ogawa, Jim Ogawa, and his wife Lisa; their daughter Makena, and Nancie Ogawa; and her daughter Jennifer. He is also survived by his sisters, Ruth Tsubota and Cherry Henmi, along with his nieces and nephews.
On Sunday May 31st, 2020 he drove his tractor on the land he loved most, the corner of Belmont and Academy, for the last time.
Thank you for all the memories, Ben. God Bless America.
