Lacks Jr. is the grandson of Henrietta. He is the son of David “Sonny” Lacks, one of five children of Henri- etta and David “Day” Lacks. Victoria Baptiste is a great- granddaughter of Henrietta. They call their presentation “The Legacy Continues.”
The book involves issues of race, ethics, class, gender, and more. And, as Reedley College English instructor David Borofka, one of the event’s organizers, told the audience, that maybe most importantly the book is “about the need to see each human being as unique, de- serving of respect if not rev- erence.”
The book also is about the determination of two women – Skloot and Lacks’ daughter, Deborah – to tell Henrietta’s story.

Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” has been the 1Book/1 College selection for 2017-18. An estimated 200 people or more attended the presenta- tion, which was held in the campus cafeteria to accom- modate a larger audience.
For those not familiar with Henrietta’s story: She was an African-American woman who was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 1951. While being treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Balti- more, Md., cells were taken from her for cell cultures – without the knowledge of her or her family.
She died on Oct. 4, 1951, at the age of 31. Her family didn’t know what happened with her cells until the 1970s.
The New York Times on March 8 included Lacks among the 15 “remarkable” women that The Times had not deemed worthy of obitu- aries at the time their pass-

barber and met Martinez. “It just clicked from the instant we talked,” Chavez said.
Vasquez is the new- est barber at the shop, just coming on board two weeks before the expo in Fresno. Chavez told him about the event and that he wanted him to be there, too. Was that OK with Vasquez? “Sure, I know what I have, and I know what it takes,” he said, adding it was a “good” experience.
Barber battles are popu- lar among fashionistas, style enthusiasts and others who appreciate haircuts with a flair. Competitions are held in the United States and beyond. Search for “barber battles” on YouTube, and hundreds of videos can be viewed. Ce- dric the Entertainer even had a TV series called “Cedric’s Barber Battle.”
Before the Fresno expo, the three Reedley barbers had a confident feeling about the contests, which are timed to add to the pressure of competition. Judges look for elements, such as clean lines,
transitions, precision, styling and overall appearance.
“We felt it in ourselves, that we’re going to bring something home,” Chavez

said. “It’s crazy how things work out.”
Chavez said it’s unusual for more than one barber to compete in a category from the same barbershop. But the Reedley trio viewed them- selves as a team. As Martinez said: “I was more happy that
all three of us were compet- ing. My whole team was up there. It wasn’t just me by myself.”
The competition required bringing clients to be the models for the haircuts. One of Martinez’s didn’t show, so Vasquez sat in his place.
Their results at the Fres- no event add to the growing reputation of The Geniune Barbershop. Clients come not only from Reedley but Fresno, Clovis, Visalia, Orosi, Selma, Orange Cove and other com-
munities. On the Booksy ap- pointment website, the Reed- ley shop has drawn almost 100 reviews, all but one giving it a five-star rating.
The Reedley barbers pride themselves on their profes- sionalism and what they do differently to serve their cus- tomers. For example, they’re open until 9 p.m. on Thurs- days, until 10 p.m. on Fridays, until 7 p.m. on Saturdays and half-days (until noon) on Sun-
