Fatal crash July 7 briefly closes 99 near Selma
MVT Staff Report
Portions of north- bound Highway 99 north of Selma were closed for more than six hours on July 7 following a morn- ing crash between a big rig and car that claimed the life of a 57-year-old Selma man.
The victim had not been formally identi- fied as July 12. Tony Botti with Fresno Coun- ty Sheriff's Office said burn injuries prevented ID confirmation.
The man died when the Toyota Prius he was driving collided with the rear of the big rig and burst into flames. A 10-year-old female juve-
nile passenger in the Pri- us managed was rescued from the burning wreck- age and suffered minor to moderate injuries.
According to the California Highway Pa- trol, a 2017 commercial Freightliner driven by 35-year-old Harbans Singh of Sanger was traveling north on 99, south of Manning Ave- nue, about in the center lane when the Freightlin- er moved into the right lane and was struck by the Prius in the right rear of the trailer.
Both the trailer and Prius caught fire as a re- sult of the collision, the CHP reported. Before smoke and fire over-
came the vehicle, the 10-year-old girl was re- moved from the vehicle with assistance of a good samaritan resoponding on the scene. The man then tried to assist the driver from the Prius but was turned away by flames, and the driver died at the scene.
Singh was uninjured
in the crash, and was cooperating with the in- vestigation. Alcohol and drugs were not believed to be factors in the crash, according to CHP.
The CHP closed ac- cess to northbound High- way 99 at Floral Avenue and Highland on ramps for much of the morning after the accident.
