of the KCUSD technology de- partment, said that education institutions are the top target for what’s called ransomware attacks. He cited a report from Kaspersky Lab, the in- ternational cybersecurity and anti-virus company, that said these type of attacks are up 250 percent in 2017.
Edmonds said that statis- tic was “really shocking.”
“Education is the No. 1 source of money for bad peo- ple,” he said. “ They are tar- geting educational institutions and in specific ways.”

Elementary Updates
Our Eagles are excited
Edmonds made it clear that KCUSD uses a multi- backup system to prevent massive-scale threats from striking a district that has thousands of desktops and Chromebook laptops.
“Crypto ransomware” isn’t a new issue but the esca- lation in this criminal activity has risen to the point that the U.S. Department of Educa- tion in recent weeks issued a warning to teachers, admin- istrators, staff and parents at campuses that serve kinder- garten to 12th grade students.
Edmonds shared a list of just a few of the educational targets hit in 2017. They range from the San Ysidro School District and Los Angeles Val- ley College in California to Cambridge University and
to participate in the annual Electrical Farm Equipment Parade on Dec. 7 in downtown Reedley. Jesus is our Super- hero!
On Friday, Dec. 8, Chapel will be presented by the Stu- dent Council.
On Saturday, Dec. 9, our chess team will compete in a tournament at T.L Reed School.
Our next PTF meeting will be on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 6 p.m. in the elementary li- brary. Please join us and have a great week!

“It’s happening every- where,” Edmonds said.
What school districts face on a business scale, individu- als and families have to be aware of regarding their own personal computers and de- vices.
The basic steps of cyber security include using strong passwords and not only using anti-virus programs but keep- ing them updated regularly.
Edmonds showed a slide that included these basic se- curity guidelines:
• Stay up-to-date on secu- rity patches on all appliances, servers and computers.

2018 Benefit Auction
St. La Salle School will host the 27th Annual Benefit Auction on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018 at the Reedley Commu- nity Center.
It will be another memo- rable event filled with lots of fun and fellowship – all for a great cause.
St. La Salle School, estab- lished in 1953, was founded by the Christian Brothers. More than 2,000 students have graduated from our school.
Today, St. La Salle edu-
cates more than 300 students from preschool to eighth grade. Our students come from Reedley as well as nearby communities and the mountain communities.
Operating a quality school like ours is costly. Ma- ny families couldn’t afford such an education without the help of the fundraisers we have each year. These events generate 40 percent of the school budget.
As we prepare for an- other great auction, we need your help to make it a suc- cess. We hope you will con- sider donating an item or service for the silent or live auctions.
There also is an opportu- nity to be a sponsor and be recognized for your gener- ous support in our Auction Program booklet. The pro- gram is given to all guests who attend.
All donations, large or small, can make a difference. (Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by the law.)
Please give with your hearts and make a difference that will last a lifetime.
