Garden Checklist: Keep a close eye on lawn maintenance
Contributed
The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local garden- ers who wish to keep their greenery, flowers, and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
Harvest vegetables and deadhead flowers regularly to encourage continued production.
Tasks for this time of year include lawn maintenance. Avoid cut- ting lawns too severely because the resulting stress causes yellowing.
Water citrus being careful not to overwater. Continuously wet soil
in the upper few inches risks root rot.
Hand pick hoplia bee- tles from white and yel- low rose blossoms.
When pruning, re- move spent blooms. Cut back annuals that have stopped blooming to en- courage rebloom.
De-candle black pines to encourage compact growth.
When fertilizing avoid fertilizing herbs as too much fertilizer reduces flavor and fragrance.
When spring planting season is over. Anything planted this month will need careful watering.
Plant summer vege-
tables at timed intervals to prolong harvest.
