Neighbors in the area said they heard Reedley Police officers breaking the back window to the home where the Canaan was located.
“There were cops going by really
fast,” said Anthony Jimenez. “We were down the street, we didn’t see any flames, but we did see smoke coming from the house.”
Watson said the cause of the fire and the cause of Canaan’s death still are be- ing investigated.

curity, nurses, facilities. It’s a big undertaking in trying to get everyone on the same page.”
With this year’s event serving as a pilot year, to see how the event plays out during the day, Paz said he was glad they de- cided to make the move.
“We felt we needed to do this,” Paz added. “The children love it and the parents do too.”
There were no scores kept at the sports carni- val. Instead, the event was used to give the kids experience and practice, and also serve as an ex- hibition for parents and relatives.
And the children and the parents, who filled the stands at the event, were not only ones to en- joy the event.
“I like seeing the kids get involved,” Paz said. “And it also gives them an opportunity to show- case what they can do... They’re excited! I like seeing the joy on their face. Their parents are here supporting them. And it’s a good commu- nity event. It brings ev- eryone together.”

done it during the day.” Yet, despite the time change, their will still plenty of parents and relatives out supporting
the local youth.
Also different in this
year’s carnival was the makeup of the student athletes. Because Wash- ington Academic Middle School switched over to seventh through eighth grade this year, this also marked the first year that sixth graders par- ticipated in the annual sports carnival.
There were football teams, volleyball teams, runners and cheerlead- ers. If there was a sport at the elementary level, it was represented at last Wednesday’s event. From third to sixth grade, the students filled the fields of Tom Flores Stadium and Dave Dod- son Field.
“This is really Sanger coming together,” said Andrew Paz, the dis- trict’s Elementary School Athletics Director.
The event serves a
couple purposes. It al- lows the kids, as well as their parents, to cel- ebrate their new or con- tinued athletic activity as well as help instill safe play, especially at the football level.
“Safety is a big is- sue,” said Karl Kester- ke of Sanger Unified. “We’re trying to make sure they’ve got those skills, how you hit, how you tackle, so that when league starts we can minimize injuries and expand the learning and the fun for the kids.”
Paz said the event nearly didn’t happen this year. Changes at the dis- trict, including the rein- troduction of sixth grade to the elementary level, made it a challenge to get this year’s event up and going. He, along with Connie Negrete of the Sanger Unified, put the event together in about two weeks time, with having planned for the event for at least two months.
“It’s a big undertak- ing,” Paz shared. “You’ve go to work with transpor- tation, food services, se-
