Pirates clinch NYL title in soccer

After a disappointing three-point loss at home to Porterville on Jan. 29, the Reedley College Ti- ger men’s basketball team came up with a team ef- fort on Saturday night in Lemoore.
Six players scored in double figures in the win over West Hills Lemoore while another finished with nine points. Hassan Bolden and Uriah Carter both had 15 points with Bolden getting 11 re-
bounds and Carter had seven boards. Carlos Fuentes was 6-of-7 from the floor for 12 points while Anthony Martinez had 11. Richard Corona and Anthony Vallin each had two 3-pointers and finished with 10 points. Braxton Hicks had nine points on three treys.
Bolden came off the bench to score 22 against Porterville while Corona had 19.
“Saturday was an overall great team perfor-
mance and bounce back big victory,” said Coach T.J. Jennings. “Every per- son on the roster scored and six and eight scored double figures. We shared the ball well and played at the pace and tempo we wanted. The 26-point vic- tory was our largest of the season.
“These last six games are very important as we are fighting for a playoff berth. Now’s the time to lock in and keep pushing towards the finish line.”

The Reedley High boys soccer team clinched the North Yosemite League championship on Feb. 3 with a 4-2 vic- tory in Fresno over the Hoover Patriots.
Senior Phillip Rico scored two goals for the Pirates (17-1-5, 7-1), setting a new school single season scoring record with 35 goals. He broke the old mark of 33 set by current professional player Anthony Velarde, brother of RHS coach Eric Ve- larde.
Reedley closed out the regular sea- son with a Senior Night home match against Sunnyside on Feb. 5. The Pirates — competing in the Division 1 playoff bracket this season — will learn their seeding and matchup this Saturday, Feb.
8. The Central Section playoffs begin on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
Reedley entered last week trailing McLane High by one game in the stand- ings, but regained a share of first place by drubbing the Highlanders, 9-1, on Jan. 28. The team then took sole posses- sion of first place on Jan. 30 by blanking Fresno High, 3-0, while McLane dropped a 2-0 decision to Sunnyside High before losing 1-0 to Roosevelt on Feb 3.

Central Section playoff seedings will be determined this weekend, and Reed- ley High is expected to get one of the top ratings for Division 2.

With two wins last week and a modest three- game winning streak, the Reedley College women’s basketball team moved in- to sole possession of sec- ond place in the Central Valley Conference.
Coach Dan Kilbert’s squad improved to 5-2 in the CVC and 10-13 af- ter posting a 60-52 win at West Hills Lemoore. Ear-
lier in the season, Reedley fell to the Golden Eagles 64-56 in Reedley. On Wednesday, Jan. 29, the Tigers recorded a 74-34 victory over Porterville College at home.
Reedley has only one game this week, travel- ing to last place Taft on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 6 pm.
Amanpreet Kaur did not play in the first meet- ing against West Hills but
came up big in both win. She had 14 points, 15 re- bounds and seven blocked shots against Porterville before getting 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting against the Golden Eagles.
Annie Lopez had a big week, scoring a season- high 30 points in the win over the Pirates before adding 13 points against West Hills. Aurelie Bravo added 17 points.

The Sanger Apache varsity boys soccer team faces a possible league- clinching week this week after facing off against Madera South on Tuesday and a matchup tonight at Madera.
Coming off two victories last week, beating San Joaquin Memorial 3-1 on Tuesday, Jan. 28 before shutting out Edi- son 3-0 on Friday, Jan. 31, the Apaches sat atop the CMAC standings with a 4-2-2 league record. Sitting alongside Sanger at the top was Madera South,
with an identical league record, while Madera was just behind them at 4-3-1.
Overall, the Apache’s varsity boys soccer team is 17-3-4.
Tuesday’s results were unavailable at press time.
As of Tuesday, the Apaches were the No. 8 ranked team in the Central Sec- tion, with Reedley ranked No. 3 and Di- nuba ranked No. 13, according to Max- preps.com. Sanger was also the No. 2 ranked team in Division 2 of the Central Section, behind No. 1 ranked Reedley. Coming in at No. 4 is Dinuba.

Twelve seniors on the Dinuba High soccer team celebrated Senior Night in style.
First half goals by Santiago Rodri- guez and Jose Ramirez gave the Emper- ors a 2-0 lead as DHS went on to capture their 11th straight match in a 6-0 win over visiting Kingsburg on Jan. 30.
Dinuba is 19-3-2 overall and 11-0 in Central Sequoia League play while the Vikings are 10-14 and 4-6.
Juan Gutierrez, Diego Rico, Romero and Rodriguez accounted for the second half goals. Jose Chavez recorded two assists while Alan Gallo and Bryan Lu- catero each had an assist.
Earlier in the week, Dinuba coasted to an 11-0 win over Immanuel and on Jan. 23 against rival Selma, the Emper- ors received goals from Jorge Duran and Gallo for a 2-0 win.
Dinuba wraps up the regular season with a match tonight at 6 p.m. at Central Valley Christian.

After starting the 2020 season with a 4-1 record going into a Tuesday re- match with Modesto Ju- nior College, the Reedley College baseball Tigers will be home for three games this weekend.
Coach Steve Pearse’ Tigers will host Golden West at 5 pm Thursday, Mission College at 2 pm Friday and Golden West again at noon Saturday.
The six-game home stand will continue with games against Sacramento City on Feb. 13 and Gavilan on Feb. 15 before the Central Valley Conference opener with Taft on Feb. 18.
The latest victory came in Gilroy on Thurs- day as the Tigers downed Gavilan 6-1. Alex Escobar got the win on the mound, allowing only an unearned run in seven innings. Har- rison Moy pitched the fi- nal two innings.
Jesse Holguin had a pair of doubles and a sin- gle to lead the Tiger at- tack. Marco Galaviz also had three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Alex Escobar allowed only an unearned run in seven in- nings to get the win.
Matthew Mathis did not allow a base runner over the first four in- nings to get the win over Modesto. Danny Gamez and Holguin each scored a pair of runs.

Reedley College tennis swings into new season

Reedley College’s men’s tennis team opened the 2020 season with three matches in three days. Head Coach Ross Gar- ner’s Tigers won two of them. The Tigers started the season Thursday with an 8-1 win in Bakersfield before an 8-1 loss in Hay- ward to Chabot on Friday. They rebounded with a 9-0 win over Mission at
home on Saturday. The Tiger women, coached by Kim Locklin, dropped an 8-1 decision at Bakers- field on Thursday before a 7-2 loss to Chabot on Fri- day.
The Tiger men won five of the six singles matches on Thursday with Jared Hang, Seth Herrera, Aaron Macog- ba, Julian Barragan, and Fidel Felix recording vic-
tories.
Reedley swept the
doubles matches. Hang and Herrera posted an 8-0 win while Dawson Javaux and Macogba winning 8-2. Barragan and Felix post- ed an 8-4 win.
The Reedley men were back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at Modesto while both teams compete at the Modesto Tournament on Feb. 7-8.

Reedley College’s men’s golf team dominat- ed the first Big 8 South Tournament of 2020 at the Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno on Monday.
Coach Scott Stark’s Tigers had the top five scores of the day as the Tigers won by 39 strokes over San Jose City Col-
lege and 48 strokes ahead of Fresno City College with a team score of 361.
Noah Kozack (Regina, Saskatchewan) led the way with a round of 70. Tommy O’Rourke (Can- berra, AUS) and Beau Willett (Toukley, AUS) fol- lowed with a 72 while Jus- tin Kim (Marsden Park, AUS) fired a 73. Chris Chomyn (Irvine) finished
with a 74 while Jarred Hernandez (Visalia) had a non-scoring 87.
The Tigers travel to Whittier on Wednesday, Feb. 5 to compete in the Orange Empire Classic, hosted by Cypress Col- lege before competing in the second Big 8 South tournament in Stockton on Monday, Feb. 10.
