When discussing health, people typically think of physical health—their weight, strength, mobility, and potential health issues they are facing. However, when looking at overall well-being, it’s important to think beyond the physi- cal and focus on mental health as well.
This is especially true for older Americans, as many are tackling physi- cal and mental health is- sues alone. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 11 million peo- ple ages 65 and older are living alone and are at risk for loneliness or social iso- lation. These issues can impact a person’s mental and physical health sig- ni cantly, leading to high blood pressure and dis- ease, as well as depres- sion. In fact, according to
a Harvard Health study, “loneliness has an equiva- lent risk factor to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, shortening one’s life span by eight years.”
Social isolation can also make it harder for people to take control of their health as they do not have a network to support and motivate them to remain socially or physically ac- tive. Activities that not only make people health- ier but also allow them to connect with others can help those at risk for so- cial isolation and improve health and well-being. Sil- verSneakers, the nation’s leadingcommunity tness program designed speci - cally for older adults, has seen the power of social- ization combined with t- ness, rsthand.
For more than 25 years,
An exercise class can be a great place for older adults to make new friends.

Keep Your Brain Fit
While many strategies for “healthy aging” exist, recent evi- dence points to the important role of hearing health in maintaining qual- ity of life long-term.
Better hearing starts in the brain. Your brain processes and interprets the sounds your ears receive. When you have hearing loss, your brain doesn’t get all the sound information it needs to understand what’s being said and it spends more energy try- ing to ll in the blanks. That extra effort can take its toll.
A study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found
that people with hearing loss who wear hearing aids had the same risk for age-related cognitive decline as people without hearing loss. When you actively use hearing aids, you are more likely to stay socially en- gaged, one of the primary ways to stimulate your brain. Like any ex- ercise, the mental give-and-take of social interaction helps to keep your brain t and slows down accelerated cognitive decline.
That’s the idea behind the Brain- HearingTM technology built into Oti- con hearing aids. With BrainHear- ing, Oticon hearing aids deliver
sound with the clearest, purest sig- nal possible—in the way your brain is best able to understand it.
Because this innovative technol- ogy preserves the important details in speech, your brain doesn’t have to strain to ll in the gaps. There’s less effort involved in listening. You en- joy a more natural, more effortless listening experience, anywhere, any- time so you can stay active and en- gaged in all that life has to offer.

Use Your Brain To Tackle Tinnitus
Approximately 80 percent of people with hearing loss also suffer from tinnitus—a ringing, buzzing, whistling or other noises in the ear. It can dis- rupt life and inter- fere with your en- joyment of every- day activities, but you can nd relief.
Sometimes, the problem with hearing loss is not just that you can't hear sounds that are there, it's that you can hear sounds that are not.
Hearing aids have
proven helpful for
people with hearing
loss who also experience tinnitus. That’s because with better hearing, the brain has other external sounds to listen to, making tinnitus less disturbing. Improved hearing also takes away the strain of listening, espe- cially in dif cult listening situations, and may help to reduce the stress associated with tinnitus.
Refocusing the Brain
There are many ways to take control of your tinni- tus and reduce its impact on your life. Oticon OpnTM hearing aids offer the bene ts of a balanced and rich sound experience that doesn’t overload the brain and a powerful solution for tinnitus relief. With built-in Tinnitus SoundSupport, the hearing aids allow you bene t from a range of soothing relief sounds, includ- ing popular ocean and nature sounds. You can adjust the sounds until they give the relief you need—wher- ever you nd yourself needing it. You can also wire- lessly stream alternative tinnitus relief options, such as your favorite music, audio books, podcasts, or even relaxation guides directly to your hearing aids.
