The city of Sanger paid tribute Nate Cantu, a 17-year-old senior at Sanger High School, for his body- building accomplishments that included championship wins at four events between August and November 2021.
Cantu, who has played football for the Apaches, has participated in bodybuild- ing for four years but began serious preparation in July 2021 when Sal Rivas became his personal trainer. Rivas, owner of "Ripped by Rivas" in Visalia, trains a number of top bodybuilders in the area.

Sanger boys, girls open CMAC play
Sanger High's reign- ing league champion soc- cer teams begin County Metro play this week, with the reigning section champion Apache boys home against Madera (Jan. 12) and then at Bul- lard on Friday, Jan. 14.
The boys (9-2-1) tuned up for CMAC play with a 6-0 trouncing of Porterville on Jan. 6 at Tom Flores Stadium. Isaiah Villalobos had three goals while Jaden Velez, Allesandro Minzo- ni and Santana Mercado all found the net once. Sanger bounced back strong from a 4-3 loss at Central on Jan. 4.
The Apaches girls (11-4-1) went 2-1 last week, downing Kings-
burg 5-1 on Jan. 4 and blanking Central 5-0 on Jan. 6 before falling 7-1 at Buchanan High on Jan. 8 in the CMAC- TRAC Challenge.
In the win over Kings- burg, Karina Gonzalez led the scoring with three goals while Gianna Mclain and Diana Gar- cia had one goal each. Against Central, two first half goals in a minute's span fueled the win.
Reedley boys drop opener on new field
The opening match at Reedley High's new soccer complex on Jan. 6 was a tough loss for the Pirates (7-5-3), who dropped a 1-0 decision to the 11-3-1 Clovis West Golden Eagles. That came on the heels of a 1-1 overtime deadlock at Tulare Western on Jan. 4. The Pirates got their goal in the first half.
Reedley's girls (2-11- 3) played their match on Jan. 6 at Sal Gonza- lez Field, and tied Tu- lare Western as America Chavez scored the RHS goal in the second half.
