Reedley Tigers freshman Cameron Lockridge (32) moves up the field tailed by teammate Francisco Ayon (6) during Reedley College's championship game on Saturday, Nov. 23. The Tigers beat the Owls of Foothill College 23-14, avenging a loss early in the season and in last year's championship game to take this year's title.
MVT Staff Report
The Reedley College men’s basketball Tigers recorded a split in the first two games of a three-game home stand by edging West Valley College 72-67 Satur- day afternoon at Reedley’s Paul Mitchell Court.
Reedley took a 6-1 record into a Nov. 26 home contest against Solano College before taking a break for the Thanks- giving holiday. The Tigers will return to the court on Dec. 5 against Napa Valley College in the 42nd annual James Clark Classic tournament in Sacramento.
Head Coach T.J. Jennings’ squad had it’s five-game winning streak snapped af- ter an 82-70 loss to the Cerro Coso Com- munity College Coyotes on Nov. 20. The Tigers made only 5-of-22 3-pointers in the loss. Anthony Martinez had four of those treys and led the Tigers with 18 points.
Against West Valley, the visitors pulled to within one point on three dif- ferent occasions in the final five minutes. A four-point play by Richard Corona with 20 seconds left increased Reedley’s lead to 70-64. A 3-pointer by Dylan Johnston cut that lead in half with 10.7 seconds left. A second later, two free throws by
Corona closed out the scoring.
Corona led all scorers with a season
high 18 points. Hassan Bolden had 14 of his 17 points for the Tigers while Uriah Carter followed with 15. Reedley made 14-of-16 free throws in the victory.
“One of the things that is a testa- ment to our team that’s it not about one individual,” said the coach. “Each game, we’ve seen different players step up. And that’s really cool to see. This game, it was Richard Corona that knocked down some gigantic shots. We’ve encouraging him and loving on him. And his teammates have been encouraging him. Just to see the fruits of his labor, putting in some extr a time. That’s fantastic. Only guy doesn’t have to feel the pressurea to do everything.”
When last week’s action started, the Reedley men were ranked 24th up in the state by the California Community Col- lege Mens Basketball Coaches Associa- tion. They were one of four previously undefeated teams to suffer their first loss last week. Two Central Valley Con- ference teams, Columbia and the College of the Sequoias, took a perfect a perfect record into the holiday weekend.

quarterback in the first half due to inju- ries although Foothill signal Cam Rottler returned in the second half.
“Drew Zaubi came in and played great,” said Marty. “That’s an unbeliev- able job by a guy stepping in. Drew hasn’t played that much but he and Bubba’s (Hickson) efficiency rating are both among the top ten in the state as far as their completion percentage and touchdowns.”
Tiger tight end Daniel Baca was named the Player of the Game. Reedley kicker Jorge Rosales was selected as the Offensive Player of the Game after kick- ing three field goals that resulted in the Tigers’ 9-point winning margin. Foothill defensive end Jordan Levu was selected the Defensive Player of the Game after recording two quarterback sacks and forcing a fumble.
Both teams had 100-yard rush- ers. Foothill’s Derje Banks ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns while Reed- ley’s Jamon Chambers finished with 125 yards on 22 attempts.
Reedley took a 10-7 lead into the halftime intermission on a 33-yard field goal by Rosales. The go-ahead field goal came eight plays after Cameron Lock- ridge intercepted a Cam Rottler pass. A penalty forced the Tigers to start the drive at their own 28.
Foothill opened the scoring with a 52-yard drive on their first possession, capped by a 29-yard touchdown run by Derje Banks.
With just under 10 minutes left in the opening quarter, Reedley lost starting quarterback Bubba Hickson with an ap- parent ankle injury after being sacked by Kaelin Myles.
Drew Zaubi took over and engineered a 73-yard scoring drive in six plays. The touchdown came on an 18-yard pass to Daniel Baca. The extra point kick by Ro- sales tied the game. On the scoring drive, Zaubi was 4-of-4 passing for 57 yards. Rosales kicked field goals of 22 and 25 yards for the only scoring in the third quarter.
Blanks’ short touchdown run made it 16-14 with a little over 10 minutes left before Jonathan Perryman’s 4-yard touchdown and a Rosales extra point closed out the scoring with five minutes and 22 seconds left in the game.
It appears that a 20-2 record over the last two seasons will move the Tigers back into the top tier of Northern Cali- fornia Community College football and could return Reedley into the Central Valley Conference. That will mean 2021 games against natural rivals Fresno City College and the College of the Sequoias again.
According to Reedley College Ath- letic Director Dr. David Santesteban, an official decision will be announced in December.
“That’s the plan,” said Coach Marty. “We would like to move up. It is going to take a big effort from everybody, from the top of the administration on down to compete against the big boys. But that’s where we feel like we should be.we are excited to move up and get back in that division.”

By a 2-1 margin, Reedley College won its first ever women’s soccer playoff match on Thursday in Fairfield.
Head Coach Onesta Francis’ squad, seeded 17th, recorded a 2-1 double over- time victory over the 16th seeded Solano College Falcons in an out bracket contest in the Northern California Community College Athletic Association women’s soccer playoffs.
“It was a good game,” said Coach Francis. “Their goal keeper was top notch. We played some of our best pass- ing strings ever. We went down 1-0 early in the second half. Their number 14 (Isa- bella Kelly-Fondersmith) hit a rocket and our goalkeeper (Sarah Cabrera) lost it in the sun. Our goalkeeper bounced back and assisted the first goal, sending a long pass to her sister (Sabrina Cabrera).” The tying goal came in the 50th minute.
“Destiny Gonzalez set up the last goal by dribbling past their left back and cut- ting into Kiki Sunamoto, who buried it in the corner.” The match winner came in the 111th minute.
West Hills Lemoore, the other Central Valley Conference team competing in the play-in contests on Thursday, fell to West Valley on penalty kicks after a scoreless tie after regulation play and overtime.
Joaquin Delta Mustangs, who won the Big 8 Conference with a 15-0-1 record.
Reedley College stayed with the un- defeated San Joaquin Delta women’s soc- cer team early before the Mustangs took control in the second half on Saturday af- ternoon in Stockton.
The 21-0-2 Mustangs eliminated the 9-9-3 Tigers from the California Commu- nity College Athletic Association North- ern California Regional playoffs with a 5-1 victory.
It was the first playoff experience in the three-year history of the RC women’s soccer program under head coach Onesta Francis.
The Lady Mustangs have allowed only six goals all season.
“Delta is stacked,” said Coach Fran- cis. “They have athletes at every position. Their number 10 (Dayana Hernandez, who had a hat trick with three goals for the winners) is an elite play maker. Our girls fought hard. Martha Lopez scored on a 40 yard free kick. But we ran out of gas in the second half. The toll of playing in overtime game in Solano Thursday re- ally took it’s toll.“
Delta advances to face Las Positas, a 3-1 winner over the Lady Tigers’ Central Valley Conference rival Taft College, on Nov. 26.
