Chukchansi Getaway
Join our next trip to the Chukchansi casino on Friday, Aug. 24.
The cost is $17, which includes $10 free play and $5 lunch buffet with photo ID. To sign up, come to the Phil Hudson Senior Room at the Reedley Senior Cen- ter on weekdays, 9 a.m. to noon. You'll also have to sign a waiver form. The center is at 100 N. East Ave.
Early registration for Reedley seniors is now open. Open enrollment starts July 30.
Payment accepted through check or money or- der made to the City of Reed- ley. The trip is sponsored by the Reedley Community Ser- vices Department.

Free Computer Classes
Classes begin on Monday, Aug. 27 in the Phil Hudson Se- nior Room, 100 N. East Ave. “Computer I” starts at 1 p.m. and “Computer II” starts at 3 p.m.

Reedley residents 55 and up can come to the Reed- ley Community Center on Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. for free fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. The center is at 100 N. East Ave.

Joanna Lemus, afterschool program coordinator, said stu- dents participated in a variety of enrichment-based learning experiences and hands-on ac- tivities.
“We wanted to expand their horizons,” Lemus said. “We’re opening their minds a little more. I know they can do a lot more than they think they can.”
The theme this year was “camp explore.” Teacher Ed- die Vasquez taught students survival skills such as how to cook food and create a pil- low out of trash. Students in the “space club” built a robot out of recycled materials and students in the “crazy art” club learned how to make art in unconventional ways. Stu- dents also learned about the Medieval era and constructed a catapult.
Leno Heredia’s classroom was turned into a wood shop where students worked with their hands to engineer their own go carts. After taking a safety training class, students

Registration is underway for the city of Reedley’s Summer Day Camp program. The camp will
used jigsaws, sanders, drills, and hammers to build the go- carts. Herediasaidtheclass teaches kinesthetic, auditory, and visual skills.
“Most students expect a computer or calculator to tell them the answers, but here it’s all paper and pencil,” he said.
Nine-year-old Brian Vil- larreal built a go cart and had the opportunity to ride in it. He said the hardest part was attaching the wheels, which took two weeks. Brian said he enjoyed working with his classmates.
“We got to tell each other what to do and help each oth- er,” he said.
Johnny Marquez, 9, built a go cart as well.
“Now I know how to build a go cart so that when I grow up and have my own kids, I can make one,” he said.
When the school year starts in August, Heredia said he will continue to work with students to enhance the go carts so they propel on their own.

program was spending time with friends. She built a bird- house and painted it. Adan Carranza, 10, worked togeth- er with Leland White, 9, and Jesus Luna, 10, to build a he- licopter out of Legos. They were proud of the finished product, which took two weeks to complete.
“It was bigger than we expected,” Adan said. “There wasalottodo,butweputour minds to it and really focused on finishing it.”
Said Leland: “It was such an honor to have people talk- ing about it and saying that it was cool.”
When the three friends got stuck on something, Je- sus said they relied on one
another and pushed through. Lemus said Washington students look forward to the summer afterschool program. “During the school year, students come up to me and say ‘I can’t wait for summer,’” she said. “They worked really
hard this year.”
The summer afterschool
program concluded with a field trip to Skywalk Ex- treme Air Sports in Madera for children in grades 1-3. Fourth and fifth-graders had the opportunity to travel to Southern California and watch Medieval Times, an interac- tive play where students are served a four-course meal and cheer for one of six Medieval Knights competing in a joust.
