Former Pirate Velarde has 3 goals on season for Riverhounds

Reedley High product Anthony Velarde will try to get back on the pitch this week as the Pittsburgh Riverhounds attempt to snap a two- match losing streak in United Soc- cer League play.
The Riverhounds (2-2) dropped their second

Velarde — who
scored in each of
the Riverhounds
opening wins —
came in during
the 88th minute of Pittsburgh's 1-0 loss to Indy Eleven in stoppage play on July 22. Velarde then was one of four subs not used in the loss to New York. For the season, The second- year midfielder has three goals and four assists this season, and defen- sively has a block and five tackles.
Pittsburgh hosts winless Phila- delphi Union II on Saturday, Aug. 1. Fans will not be in attendance for the match because of COVID-19 re- strictions.

Parlier's Evan Sanchez didn't let the effects of a five-month layoff because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation keep him from maintaining a unblemished professional boxing record.

“I felt a little rusty in there,” San- chez said on the Golden Boy promo- tions website. “But I’m honored to be opening up for Golden Boy. I know a lot of people were watching. I hope to get a two-week break and come back very soon.”
The judges scored the bout 59-54, 58-55 and 60-53 for Sanchez, who has scored six of his victories by knock- out or TKO.

Fresno Pacific Uni- versity's fall sports teams won't be partici- pating until after Jan. 1, 2021, after the PacWest Conference executive board unanimously vot- ed on July 23 to post- poned intercollegiate competition because of ongoing COVID-19 con- cerns in California and other states where the 11 conference institu- tions compete.
Fall sports affected are men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball. The Sunbirds. athletic teams include student athletes from Sanger, Reedley and Dinuba.
Fresno Pacific and other PacWest members still will be allowed to conduct organized team activities — including practices and condi- tionng — at their own discretion.

The next Golden Boy Promotions card is Aug. 28, and at this time San- chez is not scheduled for a bout that night. He's expected to return to the ring this fall.
