The Garden Check- list is filled with tips and tricks for local gar- deners who wish to keep their greenery, flowers, and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
Catch up on the tlc for your houseplants. Fertilize house plants lightly, repot as neces- sary and replace soil .
Tasks for this time of year include water- ing citrus on a regular schedule to maintain even soil moisture.
Renew mulch to help retain soil moisture.
Standing water, even in the very smallest con- tainer, can be a breeding ground for
mosquitoes.
When pruning, cut back selected annu- als and perennials to encourage growth and rebloom: alyssum, dian- thus, coreopsis, million bells (Callibrachoa), cat- mint (Nepeta) and pen- stemon.
Remove tendrils and vigorous shoots from wisteria, prune bougain- villea to promote better flowering.
Avoid planting annu- als and perennials unless it is absolutely neces- sary.
Start seeds of early spring annuals for later transplanting to your garden.
Ideally work in an ar- ea that does not get late
afternoon sun.
Enjoy annuals and
perennials: coreopsis, blanket flower (Gail- lardia), globe amaranth (Gomphrena), sunflower (Helianthus), strawflow- er (Helichrysum), day lily (Hemerocallis).
Bulbs, corms, tubers: gladiolus.Trees, shrubs, vines: crape myrtle (La- gerstroemia), oleander (Nerium).
Fruits and vegeta- bles: cilantro, melon, nectarine, okra, peach, peppers, potatoes,.
Things to ponder , dispose of fallen fruit, which harbors pests.
Keep water away from trunks of trees and crowns of plants to reduce the potential for
