Sanger High School engi- neering teacher Carmen Gar- vis was recently recognized as one of the top five teachers in California by the Carlston Family Foundation and, as part of her recognition, was given a $15,000 award as well as a $5,000 grant to be used at Sanger High School at her discretion.
Garvis was recognized at the Jan. 14 Sanger Unified School Board meeting, where Carlston Family Foundation’s Executive Director Tim Allen shared the process of selecting the foundation’s Outstanding Teachers of America Award.
The foundation receives nominations for teachers who work in high-need, culturally diverse areas. Nominations also must be submitted by former students.

Allen added.
In recognizing Garvis, Al-
len read from a couple of in- terviews he conducted with previous students of hers.
“What I remember most about Mrs. Garvis was how calm and energetic she was,” said one former student. “We could tell how much she en- joyed how much she was do- ing. She was funny but also very demanding. She wanted to make sure we truly under- stood the material before we moved on to the next con- cept...Mrs. Garvis put me on the right track at the right time in my high school career. She never gave up on me and kept heading me in the right direction. She is the teacher I hope to be when I finally have my own classes.”
Garvis received the award in November at a special recep- tion in Mill Valley. The $5,000 grant was issued last week at the school board meeting.
In her comments to the school board, Garvis said, “I can not tell you what an hon- oritisformetoteachinthis school district. I have been given the greatest gift of being able to have a career where I can make a difference.”
received over 100 nominations. From that list, the foundation's board narrows the list down to the top 10, from which five are selected for the award.
“When a nomination comes in,” said Allen. “I go after six
or seven more students who span the career of that teach- er, because I want to know if a teacher has been teaching for 15 years are they as good now as they were 15 years ago.”
Most of the nominations
come from college students, something Allen said is the true mark of a teacher’s cu- mulative work.
“I can say with much hu- mility that we select extraor- dinary teachers every year,”

Change will be com- ing for future graduat- ing classes of Dinuba High School, as the
placement due to credit deficiencies. There is also a fiscal impact as
school's previous grad- uation requirement of 230 credits is being re- duced to 220. The cred- it requirement would become effective for the graduating class of
2020 and beyond. “With the change
in class schedules, the adjustment in required units is the right thing and the fair thing to do,” said DJUSD Superinten- dent Dr. Joe Hernandez.
Three years ago, DHS went from a seven- period instructional day to a 6 period instruction- al day and under the 7
day period, students were allotted a 20 credit cushion towards meet- ing the credit require- ment. When the decision was made to change to a 6 period day, the 20 credit cushion was di- minished to only 10 credits.
Since the adjust- ment, the school has ex- perienced a significant
