Sanger
Enis Marie Merlo was born September 22, 1928 in Sanger, California to Vic- tor and Carolina Pistacchio, and was a Sanger resident her entire life. She passed away peacefully in her home on January 12, 2020 at the age of
91.
Enis was a graduate of Sanger
High School Class of 1946, and had already met the love of her life, Aldo Merlo. Aldo was drafted into the Army and returned after spending six months as a prisoner of war. Shortly after his return, they were happily married in April of 1947 and blessed with 4 children, Donna, Fred, Michael, and Gary. When the kids were old enough to attend school, she de- cided to take on a bookkeeping job. She was gifted in math- ematics and was a bookkeeper at Pistacchio Pumps, Garry
Packing Co., and Sanger Boats.
Enis always enjoyed the company of others and was loved
and respected by all. Her love and thoughtfulness sustained a very close family. She was elected Sanger’s Mother of the Year in 1999 which was an honor well-deserved. She was also a member of the Italian Catholic Federation, The Altar Society, and a Sewing Club formed by many of her friends. She loved travel and playing cards, and there was never a dull moment.
After Aldo’s passing in 1994, Enis married Dr. James Gio- vacchini in 1995. They enjoyed several years together until Dr. Giovacchini’s passing in 1999. Enis loved having an ex- tended family and enjoyed large family gatherings. She loved to cook for everyone and was famous for her exceptional homemade raviolis, along with many other wonderful Italian dishes. The annual tradition of ravioli making continued each year at her home with all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren gathering to make the 100 dozen raviolis for the holidays. It was something everyone looked forward to each year.
Above all other things, she loved her faith and her family. She loved having her home filled with 40 people for Christ- mas, and all other holidays, and everyone loved being there. She will be profoundly missed.
Enis was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Carolina Pistacchio; 1st husband, Aldo Merlo; 2nd husband, James Giovacchini; daughter, Donna Tacchino; brother, Aldo Pistacchio; and step-sons, Robert and Jim Giovacchini.
She is survived by her sons, Fred Merlo and his wife Jan, Mike Merlo and his wife Kathy, Gary Merlo and his wife Pat; step-son Tom Giovacchini; sisters, Nancy Kacerek and Flor- ence Carrara; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sanger on January 16, 2020 with interment that followed at Sanger Cemetery.
Remembrances can be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 828 O Street, Sanger, CA 93657.
Arrangements were under the direction of Wallin’s Sanger Funeral Home, 1524 9th Street, Sanger, CA 93657. www.wallinfuneralhomes.com
