Thursday, October 10, 2019 | B12 | Mid Valley TiMes Pirates edge out Roosevelt to open NYL play Reedley High will travel to Fresno tomorrow night to take on McLane MVT Staff Report The “second season” — and the primary focus for the Reedley High foot- ball team — started last week with an important victory. The Pirates kicked off the North Yosemite League campaign on a high note, rallying from an early deficit and taking control with a pair of sec- ond-half touchdowns on their way to a 25-20 vic- tory over the Roosevelt Roughriders on Oct. 4 at Sunnyside High Stadium in Fresno. Reedley (3-3, 1-0) rode the strength of three rushing touch- downs from quarterback Gannon Gabaldon along with some pivotal defen- sive plays to bounce back from a defeat with a vic- tory for the third time this season. “I was so proud of them, because it was a complete team win,” coach Tony Gates said. “All three \[phases\] — our kicking game, punt team did a good job keeping the ball away from their big guy. The defense had some really key stops, and the offense moved the ball and took time off the clock.” Senior Gabaldon rushed for 110 yards and collected another 50 through the air. Gates said one pass was on a fourth down conversion that helped the Pirates creep to within 14-13 at halftime. “It was an interesting game, because appar- ently their quarterback was hurt,” Gates said. “So they came out and started running wildcat \[forma- tion runs\] on us. It was nothing we had prepared for, but our defensive coaches and our players did a great job having to adjust.” Senior Max Alvarez had perhaps the big- gest defensive play of the night, chasing down a Roosevelt ballcarrier from behind and tackling him inside the 1-yard-line as the half ended. “That was a huge play for us as it kind of showed our resiliency. \[The back\] busted through and Max ran him down,” said Gates. Gabaldon and run- ning back Danny Cortez collected touchdowns as Reedley rallied from be- hind and built a 25-14 lead in the fourth, then weath- ered a late score by Roos- evelt (1-5, 0-1). Defensively, Gates singled out nose guard Gabriel Badilla and line- backer Joseph Jaramillo for their physical play. The defense tightened the pressure on Roosevelt to allow the offense to take control of the game in the second half. This Friday, Oct. 11, Reedley goes back to Danny Jimenez / Photo Contributed Reedley High’s Christian Sanchez (14) and Michael Rios (1) brought down Roosevelt High ball- carrier Daijon Giddens (22) during the Pirates’ 25-20 victory over the Roughriders on Oct. 4 in the North Yosemite League opener for both teams. MVT Staff Report The Immanuel High football team returns to action following a one-week bye with a road matchup in Madera Ranchos against the 3-3 Liberty High Hawks. The Eagles (4-2) went into their break on a positive note with a 45-21 thumping of Mendota High on Sept. 27, and will try to avenge a 49-19 home loss to Liberty from last year. Imman- uel already has turned the tables on a previous 2018 defeat, having downed Viewpoint High from Agoura Hills last month at County Line Stadium. In the win over Mendota, the Eagles rolled up 300 rushing yards led by run- ning back Matt Tiger (190 yards, two TDs) and quarterback Hector Davila (110 yards, two TDs). Davila also threw for 110 yards including touchdown hookups with Winston Williams and Trace Pires. Liberty has dropped three of its last four games following a 2-0 start. The Hawks’ most recent loss came by a 40- 28 score against Yosemite High. Immanuel’s final home game of the regular season is at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, against Sierra High at County Line Stadium. The Eagles close regular season play with road games at Millen- nium Charter (Oct. 25) and McFarland High (Nov. 1). $10 Fresno for another NYL contest — this one against McLane in a scheduled 7:30 p.m. varsity kickoff at McLane Stadium and its new field turf playing surface. The Highlanders (2-4, 0-1) have dropped four straight, the most re- cent loss a 41-0 drubbing at the hands of Sunnyside. “There’s no shame in their losses against tough teams,” Gates said. “I’m impressed with their size. They’ll be a challenge \[de- fensively\], even more so than Roosevelt because Roosevelt became one- dimensional \[because of injury\].” Immanuel hits the road to take on Liberty tomorrow night RHS grad, Gates, making impact with Marymount California volleyball www.midvalleytimes.com Maddy Gates MVT Staff Report Reedley High School graduate Maddy Gates is making an immediate contribu- tion as a true freshman for the Mary- mount California University volleyball team.
