Garden Checklist: Extreme pruning can disfigure trees

The 'Garden Check- list' is filled with tips and tricks for local gar- deners who wish to keep their greenery, flowers, and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
Now that November is here and the time has changed, shorter days will mean less time in the garden. Peruse gar- dening magazines and
prune trees severely in an attempt to avoid rak- ing leaves.
Extreme pruning will disfigure trees and shorten their lives.
Discard diseased wood. Fertilizing, add bulb fertilizer to the planting hole before planting bulbs.
Planting, fall plant- ing ends this month. The soil will cool rapid- ly which will slow root growth.
If you wish to trans- plant trees in the fall, it is best to wait until December or Janu- ary when deciduous and evergreen trees are dormant. Perenni- als: dianthus, euphor- bia, kalanchoe, red hot poker (Kniphofia). Bulbs, corms, tubers: Snowdrop (Galanthus), snowflake (Leucojum)
tulip, Watsonia. Fruits and vegetables: bulb and green onions, straw- berry.
Annuals: Love-in-a- mist (Nigella).primrose (Primula), pansy (Viola).
Trees, shrubs, vines: sedge (Carex), rose of Sharon (Hibiscus), bay laurel (Laurus). Enjoy now - Annuals and pe- rennials: Mexican blue sage (Salvia leucantha), pincushion flower (Sca- biosa).
Fruits and vegeta- bles: Asian pears, kale, pomegranate, persim- mon, winter squash.
Trees, shrubs, vines:,lantana, vibur- num.
Fall colors include Chinese Pistache (Pis- tacia chinensis), Heav- enly Bamboo (Nandina domestica)
Things to ponder ca-
lendula petals (fresh or dried) can be used as a substitute for saffron to color rice or flavor soups and stews.
Drought tip land- scape watering in many areas is now restricted to one day per week. Check your city’s poli- cy for winter irrigation schedule.

Another successful year for Red Ribbon Carnival

More than four hun- dred people showed up for Reedley's annual Red Ribbon Halloween Carni- val on Oct. 25.
The event was held in the Armory building and included carnival games, a bounce house, and a costume contest.
"Our costume contest was very popular and
had a great number of participants," said Madi- son Leighty, the recre- ation coordinator with the city of Reedley.
"We hope everyone who joined us had a won- derful time." The highly anticipated event is held each year in Reedley with a large turnout of participants.
