Sanger celebrates Independence Day

Youngsters on bicycles, waving flags, right, led the 23rd annual Jenni Park Pa- rade. Not far behind, below, were about 200 marchers, some pushing strollers or pulling wagons loaded with children - and almost every- one was wearing red, white and blue and waving flags.

The Fresno County De- partment of Public Health (FCDPH) has received confirmation of the first posi- tive case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Fresno County, acquired in 2018.
As of June 25 in Califor- nia, there have been nine symptomatic human cases
of WNV with no fatalities.
In 2017, a total of 553 cases with 44 deaths were reported in California, while Fresno County reported 13 symp- tomatic human cases with no fatalities, and one asymptom- atic human case.
To reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes or con- tracting WNV, Fresno County residents are urged to take the following precautions:
• Apply insect repellents that contain DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535
• Make sure that doors and windows have tight- fitting screens to keep out mosquitoes
• Repair or replace screens that have holes
• Eliminate standing water and containers that can hold water from around the home
• Contact mosquito abate- ment districts to report poorly maintained swimming
pools or water features that appear green
Residents can visit the Fresno County Department of Public Health website at www.fcdph.org to download a “Heard the Buzzzzz?” bro- chure, which contains steps to protect their family, their home, and their community from WNV. The brochure is also available in Spanish or Hmong.
Residents can also call their mosquito abatement district representative or visit www.fresnomosquito. org, www.mosquitobuzz.net or www.fresnowestmosquito. com for more information.

The Stonehaven 4th of July neighborhood parade had a theme and it had something or other to do with the "RePUGlication Party" political candidate standing in the back of the pickup. Councilmember Daniel Martinez is waving the flag.

There was lots to do - and eat and drink - while waiting for the city's fireworks show. Music was provided by "The Box" - one of the best musical groups at a city event in years. AMVETS Post 98 retired worn flags and explained the solemn ceremony. Vendors provided everything from shaved ice to short ribs and peach cobbler.
