If tight competition was what Reedley High's boys were seeking entering North Yosemite League play, they got it in a big way in their final two non-league contests.
The Pirates (7-6) trav- eled to Madera County for road games at Pacheco High (Jan. 3 in Los Banos) and Madera High (Jan. 5). First, they pulled out a 52-51 vic- tory over the Panthers (4-11) before coming up just short by a 55-54 score against the Coyotes (8-8).
Junior guard Augie Villar- real paced the Pirates offen- sive attack with his outside shooting, scoring 20 points against Madera and 13 points against Pacheco. Sophomore forward Marcus Heinrichs stepped up with 10 points and three steals to help keep Reed- ley close against Madera.
League play opened on Jan. 9 for RHS at home against Fresno High. The War- riors are 7-8 this season after reaching the Division II semi- finals last year.
Reedley will play at Roos- evelt at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, then hosts Dinuba in a 7 p.m. non-league contest on Saturday, Jan. 12. The Pirates then have consecutive league home games against McLane (Wednesday, Jan. 16) and Sun- nyside (Friday, Jan. 18).

Junior forward Yasmine Villarreal-Harris scored 16 points as the visiting Emper- ors (11-7, 2-1) downed the Eagles (5-10, 0-3) in Central Sequoia League play on Jan. 4.
Dinuba broke open a close contest with a 17-5 run in the third quarter and were never threatened the final eight min- utes. Kaylee Villasenor had seven points while Azlynn Vil- lalobos added six.

Pirates edge Fowler in final, NYL schedule opens this week

It was a momentous week- end for the Reedley Pirate girls basketball team, which won the program's first tour- nament title in more than 15 years on a special day for an absentee coach.
All-tournament selection Madison Haney scored 11 points and Abby Delport add- ed nine points as the Pirates (9-7) prevailed in a 43-40 over- time decision over the Fowler Redcats on Jan. 5 in the finals of the Parlier Tournament.
Head coach Matt Wilkin- son missed the game as his wife went into labor and de- livered the couple's son. As- sistant coach Bryan Harman filled in and led the team to the tight victory.
Junior forward Haney was joined on the all-tourney team by freshman guard Miah Paz and senior forward Clare McGahan. Haney scored 16 points in a 64-7 rout of Mina- rets High on Jan. 3 and added 12 in a 75-21 drubbing of host Parlier on Jan. 4.

Eagle boys down Dinuba

The Immanuel High boys basketball team split its two games last week, but collected the one that mattered when it came to the Central Sequoia League title chase.
The Eagles (10-5 overall) improved to 3-0 in CSL play with a 69-63 win over rival Dinu- ba High on Jan. 4 at IHS gym. They dropped a 66-58 decision at Sanger High on Jan. 5 in a Central Valley Showdown matchup, but still remain atop the league standings heading into the Friday, Jan. 11, game at Selma.
Senior forward-center Kaleb Daglish scored 21 point — 13 in the first half — to pace Immanuel, which broke a tie with four- and-a-half minutes left to build an eight-point lead before hanging on at the end.
Forward Winston Williams. who scored 18 points, hit a critical basket following an
offensive rebound and added two free throws in the final minute. Dinuba's Luke Rodriguez led all scorers with 22 points and added 11 rebounds.
Immanuel jumped to the early lead against Dinuba, but the Emperors (14-4, 1-2) battled back from a seven-point deficit in the second quarter to briefly lead before halftime. The visitors later had a one-point lead later in the third and stayed close until Immanuel's decisive push in the fourth.
Against Sanger, Immanuel trailed by one point early in the third quarter before the host Apaches (10-3) went on a decisive 17-0 run. The Eagles, who defeated Sanger for the Division III title last March, could obey draw within seven points late in the game.

Signups still are being accepted for young- sters to participate in youth basketball camps hosted by Reedley High School and Immanuel Schools that will begin this weekend.
The annual Reedley Small Ball Basketball Camps hosted by the RHS boys basketball teams, takes place on four consecutive Sat- urdays beginning Jan. 12. Other sessions are Jan.19, 26 and Feb. 2, with the latter date being the program's third annual pancake breakfast.
The weekly camp schedule has players from transition kindergarten to second grade partici- pating from 8:30 to 10 a.m.; third- through fifth- graders go from 10 to 11:30 a.m. while sixth- through eighth-graders participate from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Camps will be held in the Reedley High School gym.

Immanuel Eagles Basketball will host the 2019 Boys and Girls Soaring Eagle Hoopsters Camp. The camp runs on consecutive Satur- days: Jan. 12, 19 and 26 and Feb. 2. There are two camps — for kindergarten students through fourth grade from 9 to 10:15 a.m. in both north and south gyms and fifth- through eighth-grade from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Tigers men drop pair of conference contests

Defense led the Reedley College women’s basketball team to a big non-conference win over Bakersfield College on Jan. 4 in the Ti- ger gym.
No Renegade had more than one field goal as the Lady Tigers rolled to a 69-36 win, improving to 8-7 on the season. The BC start- ers combined to make only 4 of 31 shots from the floor and shot 18 percent as a team.
The Tigers led 18-9 after one quarter and increased the lead to 36-15 at halftime.
In her first action of the season, Zavia Barlow had 17 points to lead the Lady Tigers while Jelani Williford also netted 17 points.
Reedley starts Central Valley Conference play with two road games, facing West Hills Lemoore on Jan. 9 (results unavailable at press time) before a 6 p.m. matchup at Taft College on Saturday, Jan. 12.
MEN'S BASKETBALL Kendricks scores 17 in FPU win
Immanuel High product Nate Kendricks scored 17 points, including three three-point baskets, to help Fresno Pacific to a 71-52 victory over Hawaii Pacific on Jan. 4 at FPU Special Events Center.
Freshman Kendricks made 7 of 9 shots from the field, 3 for 5 from beyond the arc, and added two rebounds along with two as- sists and two steals. The Sunbirds (6-7, 3-5 conference) completed a season sweep of the Sharks (4-8, 1-6).
