with Vaca during the design and construction period of the new stadium, serving as a consultant for the track and field portion. From the warning track on the inside of lane-one to the distance between lane-nine and the surrounding fence, no detail was spared. There are even feet markers on the pole vault runway to allow vaulters to find their starting position.
“We offered to pay him for his time,” said Vaca. “But he refused. He gave us some great pointers. And he did it all for free.”
The fresh field, new high- tech score board and synthetic track, combined with a new 3,200 seat aluminum bleacher structure on the home side and you have the making of an incredible new stadium at Orosi High School. The bleachers, which are far wider than the old one, and 20-feet higher, seats approximately 1,500 more people than the previous.
On top of it, a new press box,
outfitted with a state-of-the- art sound and video system, a system the district was still receiving training on this week, offers not only the best view of the game but also a tremendous view of the Eastern Valley. Its highest point, however, is a perch on top of the press box that is accessed through a ladder and skylight door. It’s the perfect spot for recording game highlights.
The new Orosi High stadium would be incredible with just those things. But the new amenities go on.
There is a new snack shack that seems as big as the school’s new science wing, with a stainless steel counter that spans the length of three large rollup windows. Two murals bookend the new snack shack. One side, facing the stadiums parking lot and entrance, reminds all who enter of good sportsmanship, while the other bears the district’s motto, “Dream Big, Work Hard, Give Back.”
The murals were painted by Orosi High alumni David “Bird” Avines.
The new stadium may also be considered the most hospitable in the Valley. In addition to the afore mentioned amenities, the district even added a visitor’s side building that will serve as both ticket booth, concession stand and offer roomy girls and boys bathrooms.
The stadium is also landscaped to accommodate for the community. There are large patches of new grass where children can run around. Several benches sprinkled throughout the site provides for a park-like setting.
All in all, the new stadium has all the feel of a fresh new chapter for Orosi High School and the Cutler-Orosi community. That community is invited to the Grand Opening tonight at 6 p.m. And the district is sending a special invitation to the class of 2018, who will be honored
with a large memorial plaque at the stadium for their sacrifice of being the only class to not graduate in the school’s stadium.
As for the Cardinal’s football team, according to Orosi High Athletic Director Ken Sawatzky, they’ve yet to step foot on the new field – and they won’t until tomorrow night.
“The field will be christened on game night,” said Sawatzky.
On game night, another bonus feature will be unveiled. Without giving it away; it’ll be big, red and the players will be running through it before stepping onto the new Ed Coats Field at the new George Millhorn Stadium.
Ed Coats is expected to be in attendance at today’s Grand Opening.
