Next tournament
for Sanger High
boys in Hawaii
MVT Staff Report
The Sanger High boys’ basketball team was led by sophomore Jon Dillon in their first game of the season to beat Win- chester of Los Angeles, 85-73, in the Valley Chil- dren’s Tournament, held at Clovis North.
The 6’5” guard put up 32 points in the Apache’s season opener, the second highest by a sophomore in school history, accord- ing to statistician Ron Blackwood.
Also scoring in double figures for the Apaches in the team’s first victory were junior Luke Dillon (13 pts), sophomore Luke Karle (12 pts) and fresh- man Kaleb Cole (10 pts).
Though the scoring performance continued for J. Dillon in the ensu- ing tournament games, scoring 24 points and 25 points respectively, Sanger dropped their fi- nal two matches to Clovis North (78-63) on Nov. 22 and a close one to El Cer- rito (60-57) on Nov. 23.
In the Apache’s loss to Clovis North, L. Dillon scored 23 points.
Sanger traveled to Roosevelt yesterday in a non-conference matchup with the Rough Riders. Results from yesterday’s game were not available at press time.
Sanger will have one
more match, a home game against Paso Robles on Saturday, Dec. 12 at noon, before leaving for the tournament of a life- time.
On Dec. 18, the Sanger High boys’ varsity bas- ketball team will be participating in the La- hainaluna Tournament in Maui, Hawaii. The tournament will last until Dec. 21.
Their first game of the Hawaii tournament will be against Edison High School of Hunting- ton Beach, Ca.
Last year, the Apaches went 15-10 on the season, 4-6 in league play, and entered the CIF Central Section’s Division II play- offs as the No. 3 seed but fell in the second round to North High, 69-57.
Immanuel High, the No. 2 seed, won last year’s Division II title af- ter beating No. 4 Dinuba High in the championship game, 70-39.
Correction: Last week’s article on the Sanger High boys’ bas- ketball team incorrectly stated that the team lost their season opener to Clovis North. The Apach- es won their season open- er against Winchester on Nov. 21. The Nov. 22 loss to Clovis North was the team’s second game of the season.

Reedley High’s girls basketball team may be taking a perfect sea- son record into this week’s Reedley Varsity Girls Tournament starting Thursday, Dec. 5.
The Pirates were 3-0 heading into a non-league road game Dec. 3 at Kennedy High of Delano (re- sults were unavailable at press time) after posting a 42-37 victory over the visiting Kingsburg Vikings on Nov. 26. The girls look to extend their home unbeaten streak when they host Hanford West High in a 5 p.m. game on Thursday. Tipoff time was moved up so the game wouldn’t conflict with the annual Electrical Farm and Equipment Parade at 7 p.m.
Two teams dropped from the tournament, so the four-team event will be a round-robin format.
Sophomore Miah Paz scored 17 points while adding five assists, three rebounds and two steals in last week’s win over Kingsburg. Reedley trailed by four points at halftime, but tied the game at the end of the third quarter and used an 11-1 run early in the fourth quarter to build an eight-point advantage before hanging on. Paz cemented the win with a pair of free throws with 9.6 seconds remaining.
Senior guard Precious Hawkins put the Pirates ahead to stay with a 3-point basket, finishing with 11 points, three assists, four rebounds and four steals. Madison Haney had eight points and five rebounds while Daniela Gomez added four points and nine boards.
Reedley shot 40 percent from the field, 36 percent from 3-point range, collecting 23 rebounds and 13 steals. Center Allyson Cotton paced Kingsburg (2-3) with 15
points while Nicole Merlo added 10 points.
Next week, Reedley travels to Visalia to take on Golden West High in a 7:30 p.m. game on Tuesday, Dec. 10. The Pirates host a 7:30 p.m. non-league contest with Woodlake High on Friday, Dec. 13, then par- ticipate in the annual Dinuba/Orosi Tournament on Dec. 18-21.

give the Lady Apaches a 29-24 lead.
Up 31-27 with under 3 minutes, Sanger added inside baskets by sopho- more Elise LeBeau and freshman Natali Herrera along with a free throw from LeBeau to build a 36-27 lead. Dinuba’s Ashley Flores ended the run with a basket. That would be the last points scored for the Lady Emps.
Dinuba had con- trolled the first half be- hind the play of fresh- man guard Kailey Lopez and Ebony Rodriguez, who each had five first quarter points.
“We held our oppo- nent to 14 points which is awesome but when you only score 19 it kind of takes some of that mo- mentum away going into the locker room,” Prado said.
Yazmine Villareal- Harris led DHS with nine points and Lopez ended with 7.
