Tips for a Healthier Lifestyle
By Jim Dueck
What you allow into your daily life can have an e ect on your physi-
cal, mental, emotional and spiritual life. All of these tips may seem to be just common sense; however, it is the commitment to following them every day that will help seniors lead a healthier life.
Here are a few tips for seniors that could help promote a healthy lifestyle. Instead of watching TV or taking a nap after a meal, make that your time to ex- ercise. Just a few minutes of walking, exercising or
riding a bicycle may make a big di erence in your overall well-being.
Have you heard the term, “you are what you eat”? For many seniors, what you eat may con- tribute to a healthy or unhealthy lifestyle. What you eat can be signi cant, as well as whom you spend time with and what you spend time doing.
With the pervasiveness of media in our lives these
days, exposing yourself
to negative messages throughout the day can cause stress. Try sitting quietly and breathing deeply 3 times. It will help to relax you.
Remember to drink water throughout the day. Other liquids such as fruit juice or those specialty co ee drinks, may be high in sugar and can dehydrate you. Drinking water is es- pecially important during and after exercise and it
helps to keep your internal systems regular.
Many seniors have been prescribed a variety of medicines from a variety of physicians, so it is a good idea to have your General Practitioner re- view all medications with you on a regular basis.
If you have been diag- nosed with Type II Dia- betes, your health provider may recommend eating smaller portions and limit-
ing or eliminating high sugar foods and desserts. Try to exercise every day and the exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous. Walking at a comfortable pace for 10-30 minutes can be very bene cial.
Remember it is the daily commitment that will help you to make a signi cant improvement in your health.
