Stephen
R.
Orton 1940 ~ 2021
Steve was born in Glendale, CA to Joseph Rulon “Rule” Orton and Rhoda Bleazard.
He grew up in Monterey
Park, CA, attended Mark Kepple High school (class of 1958) and Cal Poly-Pomona University (class of 1962). Growing up, Steve spent summers on the Bleazard ranch in Mountain Home, UT, with his favorite Uncle Grant and Aunt Lois. Their children, Ross, Susan, Sandra, and Jill, as well as another cousin, Lynn Oman, were like siblings to Steve.
Steve loved taking his family camping, taught them and their friends to water ski, loved his horses and animals, and could often be found in the barn singing old country songs while working on projects.
Steve worked in veterinary pharmaceutical sales for 50 years, first for Upjohn and then for Vet Pharm, Inc. He worked, and became friends with, many of the dairymen he called on, including the Rollin family. Steve enjoyed mentoring young workers, such as Jose Jimenez, and took pride watching them grow up and start their own families.
After retiring, Steve kept busy with many organizations, including sitting on the fire board, attending city council meetings, trading photography tips with his Fresno Camera Club friends, attending the drag races, and rock hounding with his Fresno Gem and Mineral Society friends.
For years, Steve would drive to the post office with his favorite dog, Casey. They would check in on neighbors along the way and Steve was quick to offer help to anyone who needed it. When asked what they could give for repayment, he’d answer “a dollar three eighty”. When neighbors stopped to chat with Steve at the end of the driveway, he was always “just right”.
Steve suffered a stroke in the summer of 2020. The resulting inability to speak was hard on him, as he’d always been a storyteller. Steve was able to come home to Tivy Valley and passed with family members and Tasha Owens (his ‘like another daughter’) by his side.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary; his son Jeff (Joanne) Orton of Bakersfield and their children Spencer, Emily, Melanie, and Laura; daughter Susan Orton (Bill) Lucas of Satsuma, FL; and son, Grant Orton of Sanger, and his children, Keith, Miranda, Natalie, and Cody Stephen (who was named after Steve).
Services are entrusted to Wallin’s Sanger Funeral Home.
