Pirates easily down Hoover, 7-1
By Will Goldbeck
Special to the Times
After opening the season with extra inning wins over Laney and 13th ranked (in Northern Cali- fornia) Marin, the Reedley College baseball Tigers ran into a buzz saw against Si- erra College.
Coach Steve Pearse’s Tigers went 14 innings to defeat Laney 5-4 in the sea- son opener on Friday, Jan. 24, before an 11-inning 4-3 win over Marin on Jan. 25. Sierra recorded a 15-2 win over the Tigers on Sunday, Jan. 26.
Reedley played its home opener on Tuesday, Jan. 28 with Modesto Ju- nior College before a 2 p.m. game at Gavilan College to- day in Gilroy. On Tuesday,
Feb. 4, Reedley goes to Modesto for a 2 p.m. single game.
Alex Ortiz (Buchanan) scored the winning run against Laney in the 14th after a one-out double and a pair of balks. Tresten Bumutay (Clovis North), Jake Renteria (Buchanan) and Ortiz all had three hits in the Tigers’ 13-hit attack with Bumutay recording a pair of doubles. Steven Martinez (Sanger) got cred- it for the win after allowing four hits in three innings.
A home run by Dan- ny Gamez (Clovis East) proved to be the differ- ence in the Saturday win over Marin. Marco Galaviz (Hoover) and Isaiah Had- dad (Edison) finished with two hits while Josiah Hesh- maty (Bullard) got the win
on the mound while Cam- eron Gallardo (Redwood) got the save.
Reedley committed five errors in the loss to Sierra. “We had a couple of extra inning games that we did some good things on Friday and Saturday,” said Coach Pearse. Play- ing 25 innings in the first two games taxes you’re pitching this early in the year and it showed on Sun- day. Offensively we would like to see us get on base at a higher rate and un- derstands the strike zone better which I think will come in time with a more live game at bats. We’ve got some work to do at cer- tain positions so we will try around with some different
lineups.”

Reedley College faced the top two women’s bas- ketball teams in the Cen- tral Valley Conference last week. After falling to a very athletic Merced College team on Jan. 22, the Lady Tigers bounced back with a big win over rival Fresno City College on Saturday.
The split left coach Dan Kilbert’s squad with a conference record of 3-2 (good for third place) and an overall mark of 8-13 going into a Jan. 29 home game with Porterville.
It was Fresno’s first conference loss, enabling Merced to take sole pos- session of first place.
One of the key stats in the Fresno win was free
throw shooting as the Ti- gers made 20 of 22 from the foul line.
Four Tigers scored in double figures, led by Aurelie Bevao’s 29 points. Bevao made 5 of 8 3-point- ers and all eight of her free throws. Sam Mendoza (Di- nuba) added 18 points and 8 rebounds while Aman- preet Kaur had 16 points and five blocked shots. An- nie Lopez had all 12 of her points in the second half. Chastity Martinez added 13 assists.
Reedley jumped out to a 10-2 lead before holding off the Rams comeback at- tempts.
On Jan. 22, the Tigers were held to just four points in the fourth quar- ter in an 80-44 loss at Mer- ced. Bevao led Reedley
with 12 points but was on- ly 1 of 10 from the 3-point line.
“Merced is a very fast team,” said Tiger head coach Dan Kilbert. “Their team speed is the best in the league. We had a dif- ferent outlook tonight. We didn’t give up those speed points. We controlled their shooters. Amanpreet did a great job controlling the middle. Bevao playEd very well. She is obviously a very talented player.”
Both Bevao and Mar- tinez left the game after suffering apparent leg in- juries in the final minutes. Kilbert hopes they will both be available for Sat- urday’s 3 p.m. matchup at West Hills Lemoore.

A confidence-boosting road victory at Kingsburg High has spurred a win streak for the Immanuel High boys basketball team.
A little more than a month after a 29-point home loss to their Central Se- quoia League rival Vikings, the Eagles limited their opponent to just 25 points in the middle two quarters and came away with a 66-60 win. Immanuel (14- 9, 4-4) followed with a 60-47 CSL win at Exeter on Jan. 23, a 75-65 win over Chavez High of Delano at the Road to Selland Showcase in Fresno on Jan. 25 and then an 82-77 home decision over Centennial of Bakersfield on Jan. 27.
“Defensively, we’re finally starting to get it together with what we need to do,” IHS coach Chris Woods said of his squad, which had yielded 95 points to Kingsburg in the first meeting. This time, however, the Eagles switched up zone defenses and keyed on the Vi- kings’ main offensive threats.
Winston Williams scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quar- ter while Shawn Rodgers added six of his 16 points down the stretch. The two juniors combined to hit six of nine free throws in the quarter, and the Eagles held on despite Williams fouling out near the end of the game.
In the win at Exeter, guard Ryan Chavez scored all nine of his points in the final quarter while Rodgers and Williams added six apiece as Immanuel broke it open with a 24-12 run. Rodg- ers scored six points in the first and second quarters as well to finish with a game-high 21 points. Guard Jonah Tolpezninkas had four 3-point baskets while scoring 12 points, following up a 14-point performance against Kings- burg when he also had four treys as well as 11 second-quarter points.
“We had some guys hit some shots and we were able to combine that with really good defense,” Woods said.
Against Chavez, Williams led the way with 24 points and 17 rebounds while Rodgers added 18 points and 10 boards. Amren Purewal chipped in with 14 points and six boards.
The Eagles then ran their win streak to four by outscoring Centen- nial 46-40 in an up-tempo second half. Williams scored 19 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, including nine in the final quarter. Rodgers scored five of his 18 points in the fourth while Tolpezninkas and Landon Yamada each scored 12 points.
Immanuel entered the Jan. 29 CSL showdown at Dinuba looking to avenge a 65-60 loss in first-round play. The Ea- gles are off on Friday, Jan. 31, but have another big road test on Tuesday, Feb. 4 with a 7:30 p.m. league matchup at Selma. In that game, the boys will try to avenge a last-second 76-75 home loss to the Bears.

Immanuel High’s girls battled in a pair of league road contest, but lost 52- 39 at Kingsburg on Jan. 21 and 46-34 at Exeter on Jan. 23. The Eagles (7-16, 1-7) bounced back on Jan. 25 to post a 59-44 victory over Golden Valley High of Ba- kersfield at the Mission Oak Showcase in Tulare on Jan. 25.
Immanuel broke it open in the third quarter with a 22-15 run, getting seven points apiece from Sammie Greene (game-high 22 points) and Brooke Hatch (13 points). Guard Alegria Pena added 13 points including four 3-point baskets.
The girls played at Dinuba High on Jan. 29, then after a bye return home for a 7:30 p.m. home game against Sel- ma High on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
