Senior Center Lunches
Meals taste so much bet- ter when you can enjoy them with others! Join us in the Phil Hudson Senior Room weekdays at 11 a.m. (except holidays) for a nutritious lunch and good time. This program is partially funded by the Fresno-Madera Area Agency on Aging.

Ferrell, who took over starting the 2016-17 season, was accompanied by Alex Or- tuno, Augie Villarreal, Daniel Cortez and Anthony Figueroa of the varsity team, and Aaron Todd of the JV team.

In Ferrell’s first year, the varsity team had a 2-25 re- cord. As of Jan. 9, the team was 7-9 this season. (Ferrell said they were 12 possessions away – in which a play could have gone their way – from being 12-4.)
He described not only the program’s focus on the sport but on academics and main- taining solid grade point av- erages. He said the daily dis- cussion among the program’s staff is “how do we prepare these young men to become leaders in our community and also make their lives better?”

This past summer, for ex- ample, RHS basketball team members visited the Univer- sity of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. At the KCUSD meeting, pho- tos of the trip were shown on video monitors.
“The one [photo] with the whole team that was actually a moment in my life that I will probably never, ever forget,” said Ortuno, who’s a senior. “I was actually playing on the court of the University of Or- egon. It was a pretty fun day for us.”
KCUSD Superintendent John Campbell said at the meeting that he asked Ferrell and players to come to the ses- sion “because I’ve been very impressed by your program and your students, and I just wanted a chance to show the board just one example of the many great programs we have for kids out there.”

In addition, the Reedley Library Book Group at its next monthly session (first Tuesdays of the month, in this case Feb. 6) will be reading “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr.
The novel earned the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
I was happy to hear that because it was one of the wonderful novels I read in 2017. Set during World War II, it involves a blind girl, her devoted father, an orphan boy, a cursed diamond, and the evil of war.
But the story also reaf- firms the strength of love, loyalty and the human spirit.
I hope the group enjoys it as much as I did.

Elliott earns master's degree

Jared James Elliott, who attended Reedley High School, last month earned a master’s degree in business administration from Park University in Missouri.
The university’s 2017 Kansas City Area Com- mencement ceremony was
held on Dec. 9. The uni- versity had 397 students earning different levels of degrees and certificates eligible to participate in the ceremony. Park University serves 16,500 students at 41 campus centers in 22 states and online as well as at 33 military installations across the country.
