Opportunities to Travel are Good for Your Health
By Jim Dueck
When seniors live at home
in their later years, they
may be missing out on the advantages of travel to other interesting locations that are available when they live in a retirement community. Many active seniors do not have the resources to plan their own out of town trips or they may no longer be able to drive.
ere are many health bene ts associated with trav- el. It has been scienti cally proven that travel reduces
stress because it may decrease depression and increase happiness, with long- term bene ts, such as a decrease in the risk of heart attack.
Travel expands your mind as you meet new people and adapt to new situations, with a result of increasing cogni- tive exibility that keeps your mind sharp. Studies have shown a connection between travel and an increase in creativity, a deeper sense of
cultural awareness and per- sonal growth.
Travel keeps you t be- cause you are more likely to walk the streets of cities or hike to see nature. For ex- ample the residents of Palm Village Retirement recently took a trip to Point Lobos State Reserve. Our activity director made all of the ar- rangements and the residents just needed to sign up and show up.
Travelers often live longer
because their immune sys- tems are boosted. Research shows that exposure to some dirt and minor illnesses actually keeps your body and gut stronger because having some new bacteria in your life isn’t a bad thing.
And of course the social aspect of traveling with peers o ers great bene ts. Palm Village residents have trav- eled as a group to southern California, to see the Regan and Getty Museums, to
Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks and nearby attractions such as ree Rivers and Hanford. ey had a fun time and continue the experience as they tell stories of the trip to their friends and families.
So it is important to re- member that life at a Retire- ment Community o ers you many advantages to be active and experience new adven- tures in life that you may not have if yo

Simple and natural ways to lower blood pressure
High blood pressure is a big problem. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly one in three adults in the United States has high blood pressure. In Canada
in 2014, slightly less than 18 percent of Canadians ages
12 and older reported being diagnosed with high blood pressure.
While such gures might be frightening, Johns Hop- kins Medicine notes that
there are some simple and natural ways for people to lower their high blood pres- sure.
• Opt for heart-healthy foods. Instead of foods that are high in sodium, eat a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Check labels before buying prepared foods at the grocery store, as many such foods are high in sodium.
• Look for foods that contain probiotics. Johns
Hopkins Medicine notes that studies have linked foods that contain probiot- ics to healthy blood pressure. Probiotics are consumable live bacteria, and while stud- ies regarding the relation- ship between probiotics and blood pressure are ongoing, researchers believe probiotics may produce chemicals that, when absorbed in the blood stream, may activate recep- tors in the blood vessels to lower blood pressure.
• Lose weight. People with high blood pressure who are carrying a few extra pounds should know that research indicates extra weight can cause injury to the heart. Dropping those pounds, especially through physical activity that can boost heart health, can help men and women lower their blood pressure. HW176108
