Battle for the Boot: Cavs down Eagles

The Immanuel High Eagles fell to 2-3 in 2018 after losing to Central Valley Christian 51-21 on Sept. 14 at the Immanuel Sports Complex.
The Eagles trailed 20-14 at halftime, before the Cavaliers scored 31 points in the third quarter to extend their lead to 51-14 and went on to win.
Trailing 14-0 with nine min- utes left in the first half, Matt Tiger, Immanuel High quarter- back, connected with Andrew Herrera, Immanuel High re- ceiver, on a 51-yard touchdown pass to cut the Cavaliers lead to 14-7.
CVC scored on the ensuing possession to extend their lead to 20-7.
Immanuel then answered back when Tiger found Derek Wood on a 19-yard touchdown pass with less than a minute left in the second quarter.
CVC led 20-14 at halftime. The Cavaliers scored 31
points in the third quarter. The Eagles scored in the fourth quarter when Tigers connected with Chris Gurrola on a 15-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to make the final score 51-21.
Immanuel will play Mendo- ta High School on Friday, Sept. 21, in Mendota.
IHS Volleyball
The Immanuel High Ea- gles volleyball team moved to 1-2 in the Central Sequoia League with a 3-0 win over Dinuba High School on Sept. 10. The Eagles then defeated Lindsay High 3-0 on Sept. 13 in a non-league matchup in Lindsay.
The Eagles have won six of their last seven matches.
On Sept. 10, the Eagles beat Dinuba 3-0. Set scores were 25-18, 25-16 and 25-22.

They then will play Han- ford West High School on Thursday, Sept. 20, at Imman- uel High.
They will host Central Val- ley Christian on Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Reedley.
High School Girls Tennis Pirates sail past Highlanders

Coming into the season, Randy Lepp, Reedley High Pi- rates girls tennis head coach, knew defending the North Yo- semite League championship the team won in 2017 would be tough with a young and inex- perienced team.
With eight of the nine players on the 2018 team be- ing newcomers, the Pirates are currently 3-0 in the NYL after a victory over McLane High on Sept. 13 at Reedley High School.
The Pirates also won the Visalia Invitational Division V title after defeating Fowler, Lindsay and Hanford West high school's on Sept. 14 in Visalia.
On Sept. 13, Reedley High defeated McLane 8-1.
“I was a little nervous about the match at the begin- ning. McLane's No. 1 and No. 2 players are excellent play- ers,” Lepp said. “But after we started it was obvious we were stronger at the No. 3 through the No. 6 singles po- sitions and won those matches pretty fast. We only gave up

Tigers football stay unbeaten in win over Comets

After winning the Fire- baugh Tournament, the Im- manuel High Eagles girls ten- nis team kept the momentum rolling.
The Eagles were domi- nant in a 9-0 victory over the Hanford West Huskies on Sept. 13 at the Immanuel Sports Complex.
“They were relaxed and were able to focus and play to the best of their ability,” said Tyler Toews, Immanuel High head coach. “We focused on a few things in practice and I was pleased to see the suc- cess in those areas on the court during their matches.”
Immanuel High won all six singles matches and then swept the three doubles matches.
Grace Goertzen, Noelle Robbins, Hannah Friesen, Janelle Wood, Elena York and Jackie Reimche each won their singles matches.
No. 1 singles player Go- ertzen won her match 6-0, 6-0, while No. 2 singles play- er Robbins won by a score of 6-2, 6-0.
Friesen won her match 6-2, 6-0, Wood took down her opponent 6-1, 6-0. York won her match 6-0, 6-0 and Re- imche won 6-0, 6-1.
Goertzen and Robbins, Friesen and Wood and Kate Enns and Hunter Kreiter com- bined to win the three doubles matches.
Enns and Kreiter won their doubles match 8-0.
The Firebaugh tourna- ment was a big confidence boost for the team Toews said.
“Since the Firebaugh tour- nament, the ladies have been working on key areas they will be facing in league,” Toews said. “We are working on placement, playing aggressive and maintaining consistency.”
Heading forward in the season, Toews said that he be- lieves his team will continue to improve.
“We are so blessed as coach- es having a team filled with committed, hardworking and forward thinking young ladies who constantly strive to do their best,” Toews said. “I believe the team will continue to make the progress they’ve been display-
