Continuous slow movements and balance are part of routine

Bill Titus, a local tai chi teacher, stood in front of his class of 13 senior cit- izens on Aug. 6 to make sure they were relaxed and ready to start.
"Your focus is still straight ahead, your knees are bent, and your shoulders are relaxed," Titus told the class.
"Separate your feet again, toes turned out, back against the wall, sink down, put your palms out in front of you, imagine that you're hugging a tree."
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese exercise that involves slow, consistent movements. It is taught at the Reedley Senior Center on Mondays from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The movements are low impact and ac- cording to experts have enormous health

benefits for those suffering from a vari- ety of physical ailments.
Titus teaches all over the Central Valley including Reedley and said he's been teaching the practice for 8
years.
"I was really
lucky finding tai chi," he said. "I re- tired in 2005, look- ing for something
to do when I found the Clovis Senior adult program."
According to health.harvard.edu, tai chi is often called meditation in motion but should be called medication in mo- tion because of how well it helps people physically.
One of Titus' students, Bobby Ikemi- ya, said he's living proof it works.
"Three and a half years ago, I had a really bad stroke," said Ikemiya. "I couldn't walk, I was bedridden, I was in a wheelchair and then I went to a walker, then I went to a cane, and then I went to physical therapy."
His physical mobility was so bad that Ikemiya said he would have to shuffle his feet into class and had to hold onto a chair during certain exercises.
"When I first started here last year, I was walking with a cane, I wasn't even driving," he said. "Now, I'm walking with- out a cane and I can drive."
Connie Adolf is another of Titus' stu- dents. She began the class one year ago and said she's also seen improvements in her flex-
ibility.
