The Reedley High Pi- rates girls volleyball team opened their 2018 season with a statement.
The Pirates defeated the Yosemite High Badgers 3-0 on Aug. 14 at Reedley High School. Set scores were 25- 17, 25-22 and 25-21.
Reedley High then de- feated El Diamante High from Visalia 3-2 on Aug. 16 in Visalia.

Yosemite High has
played in two straight Cen- tral Section Finals and the importance of the season opening victory over the Yosemite program was not lost on Reedley High.
“We played well and the team looked good offensive- ly and defensively,” said Ken Tatami, Reedley High Pirates head coach. “We met our expectations.”
Julie Scott led the Pi- rates with 12 kills, while Maddy Gates had 11. Nikole Rodriguez had 10 kills.
Kayla Rocha and Rodri-
guez each had three serving aces.
Reese Kubo had 45 digs to lead the Pirates, while Ro- cha ended with 34 assists.
Coach Tatami hopes the win gives the team confi- dence.
“You can't put a price on what just happened. You beat a team like Yosemite and you want to use the momentum to springboard into the rest of the season,” Tatami said. “Our preseason is going to test us and that is what we want.”
On Aug. 16 against El Diamante, Scott and Gates each had 10 kills. Rodriguez ended with seven. Reese Kubo had 14 digs and Rocha ended the match with 30 as- sists.
The Pirates have eight seniors on the team in 2018 and that experience helped the team.
“We continued to play at a high level throughout the match. We didn't fold but i think when you have a team full of seniors on the court that leadership kicks in,” Tatami said. “They know what it takes.”
