I was working that day. I had a part time job at an eye doctor's office while I was finishing school.
My daughter was only 9 months old at the time. I re- member driving to work and listening to the news on the radio. The DJs sounded so confused, no one really knew what had happened.
Later, as more details be- gan to emerge I remember feeling a real sense of fear. I felt our country was vulner- able.
I remember walking outside on my lunch break, looking up at the sky and it was eerily quiet. Not a plane in sight.
Following the attacks all flights were canceled throughout the country, I never realized how much activity was in the sky until it wasn't there anymore.

In 2011 my husband and I visited the 9/11 memorial in lower Manhattan.
The museum was still un- der construction at the time and hadn't been finished. The memorial however, was already completed and we wanted to make it a point to stop there on our trip.
Let me preface this by saying, New York is a busy city. It's fast, it's loud, 24 hours, non-stop. We'd wake up to sirens, taxis, people right outside our hotel room. But when we visited the me- morial grounds, they were quiet; they were solemn.
There were more than a few hundred people there. No one was talking. Every- one was quiet, some cried, others held their head down, but no one talked. The only sound that could be heard was coming from the water fountains. It was a compel-

ling moment, one I won't forget.
I hope we each take a mo- ment to remember the vic- tims who lost their lives 17 years ago. Those who went to work and never came home. The first responders who rushed into the burning towers to save victims and sadly also became victims themselves.
Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001 was a dark day in our his- tory.
More than 2,000 people lost their lives, some whose remains have never been found. Let's never forget these victims, but let's also never forget the strength our country showed in the aftermath of the destruction.
How far we've come since then, and how great our country will continue to be no matter what obstacles are put in our path.
