be guys out, for injuries, for being out sick, but whatever the case, they'd just be out," he said.
"So, I just threw it out there one day, because people would say, 'It's not possible for everyone to be here for the whole month, someone will be out'."
Gonzalez soon realized that calling in sick and "on the job" injuries were related, and if he could prevent one, he could prevent the other.
An employee would have poor safety techniques, be in- jured at work, and then call in sick. Gonzalez recognized the cycleearlyonandsaid itthen was his mission to change the environment and change the habits of the team to ensure better performance and less sick days.
"During safety meetings, I would find myself repeating the same thing over and over because the common injury was improper lifting tech- niques. Lifting heavy items
the wrong way," he said. "I told them, 'Come on guys, you've been here how long and you still don't know how to lift these things properly.'"
Gonzalez began with reg- ular safety meetings. A prac- tice that had not been done prior to his arrival.
Frank Carillo, Custodial Supervisor for the district, has been with the district for more than 30 years and said he has seen a change in his team members as well.
"Sometimes we have to keep reminding the guys of the topics depending on what the accident was," said Carillo.
"I've noticed that we need reminders, every three months, ladders, the next month, slips trips and falls, we have to continually remind them."
Carillo also said that weather conditions play a role in safety as well.
"Observe your surround- ings as your walking to and from areas, we tend to look straight, but there are a lot of things happening above us," Carillo said.
"We have to be aware of

that as well."
The maintenance and
grounds department at KCUSD has more than 20 em- ployees who work on every- thing from: electrical outlets and transformers to fixing air conditioning units on the rooftops, lawn maintenance, as well as going up and down ladders and working with a number of power tools.
"Chainsaws, edgers, mow- ers, trimmers," said Gonzalez. "Also, us moving around from various sites, traffic is some- thing we obviously cannot control what the other person is going to do, those are ob- stacles we need to be careful with too."
Gonzalez said he's proud of how far his team has come. He said they have built good habits and he hopes they can continue to practice them.
"We've had that safety board with numbers for awhile now, and at first we were focused on the num- bers" said Carillo.
"Now we don't worry about the number we just fo- cus on continuing the safety part of it."
