Pirates, Apaches, Emps all win
Reedley 2-0
after win at Sierra Pacific
By Jon Earnest
Mid Valley Times
The Reedley High Pirates built a large lead through three quarters before holding on for their second consecutive non- league football victory.
Running back Ryan Warken- tin and receiver Khalil Yalong each scored two touchdowns, helping RHS build a 33-7 lead on its way to a 33-21 victory over the Sierra Pacific Golden Bears at Hanford's Neighbor Bowl on Aug. 27.
Sanger and Dinuba High bounced back from season- opening defeats last week. The Apaches dominated the second half in a 27-7 victory over the Roosevelt Rough Riders at Tom Flores Stadium while the Em- perors outscored Tulare West- ern 48-20 behind 432 yards passing from Casimiro Barra- gan and a record 277 receiving yards by Michael Olvera.
Reedley's win was sparked by an early goalline stand, which set the stage for the of- fense to get untracked early in the second quarter. Warken- tin's first touchdown came on a 2-yard run (extra point failed), and following a Fernando Gar- cia field goal the Pirates made

MVT Staff Report
The Dinuba High Emperors reverse their shaky start to the volleyball sea- son, prevailing in two home matches last week including an emotional four-set win over region rival Reedley High.
Dinuba (2-2 enter- ing an Aug. 31 match at Hanford) opened the season with road losses to Bullard and Tulare Western, and then dropped a 25-22 opening set on Aug. 24 against the Pirates at DHS gym. But the Lady Emps rallied to capture the next three sets, 25-20, 25-15 and 25-23.
Dinuba then car- ried the momentum into a 25-10, 25-19 and 25-10 sweep of Tulare Union on Aug. 26. Be- than Moreno collected 10 kills while Krysta Casa added five kills.

For The Times
A new era in Reedley Col- lege football begins on Satur- day, Sept. 4, at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton.
The Tigers will return to the field after the pandemic stopped the 2020 season be- fore it could start. Eric Marty left Reedley for the offensive coordinator position at Gram- bling University.
Rob Hartenfels, who was an associate head coach at Reedley in 2018, takes over for Marty. Hartenfels put to- gether a coaching staff and greeted a den of about 100 players at the first workout. Attrition has dropped the current roster to about 90
student-athletes.
Oddly enough, Reedley
replaces the Delta Mustangs in the Valley League. The Tigers will end up playing Delta twice in a home and home. The schedule includes
scheduled games at College of the Sequoias (on their cam- pus field instead of Mineral King Bowl) and district cousin Fresno City College.
Other conference games are against Sacramento City,
Modesto Junior College and West Hills Coalinga.
No night games are on the schedule. The latest kickoffs are at 3 p.m. at Santa Rosa on Sept. 19 in week three and home with Fresno City in the
final regular season game on Nov. 13.
There will be a crowded quarterback room in Reed- ley as Hartenfels reported six quarterbacks are on the roster, which had not been re- leased to the public, as of the morning of Aug. 30.
One of those signal callers is former Dinuba High stand- out Josh Magana. The coach said that Magana is a quality kid that would come to prac- tice some times straight from working with his father.
Among the running back candidates are local kids Ro- man Rodriguez and Elijah Beltran along with Aaron Oli- vares from Selma.

it 16-0 late in the half when Jacob Rocha hooked up on a short pass over the middle to Yalong. The junior shed a pair of tackle attempts to complete the 35-yard scoring play.
Yalong added his second TD in the third quarter, a 10-yard run on a jet sweep, to make it 23-0 before Sierra Pacific found the end zone. Garcia added his second field goal late in the third before Warkentin (151 yards on 17 carries) broke it open with a 50-yard scoring
dash. Yalong finished with 55 yards on eight catches.
Reedley returns home for a Friday, Sept. 3, non-league game with Woodlake.
Reedley High wide receiver Khalil Yalong sheds a Sierra Pacific defender to score his first of two touchdowns in the Pirates' 33-21 non-league victory in Hanford on Aug. 27.

Reedley College football opener this week in Stockton
Tigers roll in women's soccer opener
By Will Goldbeck
For The Times
There’s no doubt that Reedley College women’s soccer coach Onests Francis has his team ready for the 2021 season. In the opener the night of Aug. 27 in Reed- ley, the Lady Tigers rolled to a 12-0 non-league victory
over Cerro Coso College of Ridgecrest.
Both Denise Elias-Marti- nez and Mariela Cruz scored three-goal hat tricks in the first half for Reedley, as Sumiko Sunamoto scored on an assist from Perria Ed- mond in the sixth minute.
Also finding the back of the net for the Tigers
were Evelyn Martinez Isa- bella Baez, Amber Becerra, Charizma Sunamoto and Ed- mond, who added two assists.
Competition is expected to get tougher for Reedley this week, as the Tigers host- ed Allan Hancock on Aug. 31 before hosting Merritt Col- lege of Oakland on Friday, Sept. 3.
