2023 has been a very busy and successful year for 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards (QDG)
based in Norfolk. At the forefront of reconnaissance, the Regiment has continued to go from strength to strength in both UK and Overseas Operations. Deployments have seen Squadrons sent around the globe ranging from Poland and Norway, to America. Continuing to balance their external commitments along with their physical training ethos, the regiment has invested considerable time and resources into their Gymnasium’s facilities, technology and innovation with a newly developed PT strategy.
Recently, B Squadron assumed responsibility from A Squadron, which had been deployed on Op CABRIT for the preceding six months, marking the Regiment’s primary focus. Physical Training (PT) has intensified significantly to ensure our readiness as a combat unit, with sessions proving tough, challenging, and vigorous. This emphasis on readiness will escalate in the coming months as we gear up for additional commitments. These include a Headquarters and A Squadron

detachment supporting Op INTERFLEX and C Squadron’s deployment to America for Ex DIAMONDBACK. Undoubtedly, this period represents a demanding phase for the Regiment.
Amidst the rigorous training regimen of QDG, one particularly arduous experience was the resilience training day held by the Gym Staff. The day started with a theory-based Mental Skills Training package, followed by a practical serial and opportunity to apply these skills at Holkham Beach in the depths of winter. This demanding session was designed not only to enhance physical capabilities but also to fortify mental resilience.
In the sporting world of QDG, they’ve had some fantastic opportunities with the Nordic and Alpine Skiing teams. In particular, the Alpine team had a hugely successful season being crowned overall RAC Champions with competitors from the Regiment selected as Army Representatives. The newly formed Boxing team also had a successful initial first season entering the RAC Corps Championships and having their own

Adjutant (Capt Cooper) crowned as the RAC welter-weight Champion, not bad for someone who only stands 5’4. It must also be added that Cfn Brooks from the REME LAD had an incredibly successful season as a full-time representative detached with the Army Boxing Team. The end of the year also saw QDG host a level 1 Boxing Coaching Course where 11 QDG personnel were successful and are now ready to start their coaching journeys, spreading the newly formed passion for the sport within the Regiment.
This year saw a great opportunity seized for the unit to conduct AT in Scotland, France, Germany, and America. This was post Op CABRIT where soldiers had the opportunity to experience the vastness of the AT opportunities which have seen individuals go further and gain wider qualifications. When groups weren’t conducting rock climbing, they were hitting the fast downhill routes on mountain bikes where this tested individuals both physically and psychologically. All activities above played a very intricate role in developing personnel.
