what’s that’? Having worked as an ERI and then a mainstream RAPTCI, other than skiing and the odd AT expedition, I hadn’t touched AT since being on my RAPTC Instructors Course. Thankfully I had an extremely talented Wing Sergeant Major (WSM) in WO2 (QMSI) Dave Mudge and Chief Instructor (CI) in SSgt (SSI) Luke Griffiths to guide me in the right direction until I firmly found my feet.
The Temporary Employed Elsewhere (TEE) scheme, now rebranded as Adventurous Training Leaders (ATLs), continues to go from strength to strength. This fantastic opportunity, mainly comprising of JNCOs and below, allows the Army’s most junior cohort to gain AT leader qualifications and deliver multi- activity serials back to the Field Army. To support the leadership development training of our future officers, the Wing continues to deliver multiple serials for the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, giving them that early exposure to AT and Adventurous Leadership & Resilience Training (ALeRT), covering its benefits and rewards which we hope they will take forward in their careers and promote AT at every opportunity.
One of the Wing’s priorities is to continue its personal and professional development. Unfortunately, all Wing staff

being avid fans of the ski scheme and wanting to progress our qualifications, it has been a balancing act to fulfil all of our aspirations. We were fortunate to have the WSM delivering a Ski Foundation course on the recent Ex ALPSKI and I even managed to get the skis back on to complete (and pass) my Ski Leader 1 qualification. The CI continues to give back his caving expertise to the wider AT group, assisting with the delivery of Ex SPANCAVE.
ARMY ADVENTUROUS TRAINING WING HARZ (AATWH)

Nestled in the Harz Mountain area of central Germany, the Wing has become a staple fixture for troops exercising in this fellow NATO country. With just two RAPTCIs overseeing and on many occasions delivering foundation qualifications to members of the Army, this post has seen significant change in

the past two years as it takes the mantle of the European-based equivalent of Trails End Camp in Canada since its closure.
WO2 (QMSI) Ross Duncan has shown me the ropes since arrival and significant staff churn has seen new opportunities to set the wing in a new direction. The recent acquisition of the ‘building next door’ will allow for three to four locally employed civilians to be our instructional staff, up from the previous two, catering for 18-24 students on a weekly basis and giving us bespoke storage facilities to best deliver to our customers.
The past year has seen routine delivery of MTB, climbing, paddle sports and some multi-activity courses, providing soldiers with foundation level qualifications. I was particularly looking forward do the Winter serials, but the El Nino impacts put pay to most Nordic delivery less three great weeks and some Winter Staff Training in Norway, delivered by JSMTC.
