URBAN OBSTACLE COURSE
Sgt (SI) J Tait RAPTC
Over the past year the highly prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) has added a challenging but highly rewarding element into the Defensive Exercise during the Regular Commissioning Course Senior Term. The course has been tailor-made to challenge Officer Cadets (OCdts) in aerial confidence, fitness, mental robustness, fortitude, confidence in tight spaces and leadership.
The course itself consists of scaling and descending the side of skills houses via the methods of climbing and scaling, testing the OCdts functional strength. Confidence at height is challenged by getting the OCdts to pause and touch their toes whilst on the shuffle bars across the top floors; additionally, an illusion jump is utilised to further test their aerial confidence. Furthermore, various tunnel systems are utilised, these challenge movement in small, enclosed spaces whilst depriving the use of senses.
The Urban obstacle course works as a non-tactical training serial whilst deployed on exercise which is welcomed by the OCdts. Personally, as an RMAS RAPTCI, its rewarding to guide the OCdts on this serial as it gives them a real sense of achievement by attempting challenging obstacles which place them outside of their comfort zone.
As a relatively new aspect added into the training programme across RMAS, the permanent staff and OCdt’s have thoroughly enjoyed this rewarding aspect and it has delivered positive results and training benefit.
ENDURANCE EVENT
Sgt (SI) J Salmons RAPTC
In January 24, Officer Cadets (OCdts) from the Senior Term of Commissioning Course 223 became the first to undertake the newly designed Endurance event to earn points towards the prestigious Sovereign’s Banner Competition.
The event had never been seen before at RMAS and was designed from its grass roots to execution by the RMAS PT
RMAS Vs Breda.
Wing, led by Sgt (SI) J Salmons RAPTC. After rigorous testing and amendments, the final product saw the event include a mental fitness test, obstacle course, speed march, vehicle extraction, log race and timed sprint finish elements, all completed concurrently across a full day of competition for the Senior Term OCdts.
With the event proving to be a total success, future OCdts can now expect to undertake the Endurance event during their time at RMAS with the competition providing yet another platform for individuals to demonstrate the physical and mental fitness required of our future Officer leaders.
