ACADEMY BOXING
Sgt (SI) S Cousins RAPTC
On Tue 28 Nov 2023, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) hosted an electrifying boxing night. Organised by Sgt (SI) McGregor RAPTC and the PT Wing Team, the event showcased the core values of our future Army leaders. Head coach Sgt (SI) Cousins RAPTC and Coach SSgt (SSI) Maling RAPTC guided the OCdts through an intensive 12-week training package, finally selecting 20 OCdts from 100 hopefuls to box on the night. The event highlighted the dedication of both the coaching staff and OCdts in shaping the future military leaders, both physically and mentally.
“It was a great honour to walk the future Officers of the British Army into the ring, the hard work, and dedication they showed was second to none and a true testament to their characters.”
SO2 ADVENTUROUS TRAINING
Mr J May
Circa 500 UK OCdts have undertaken an Adventurous Leadership & Resilience Training (ALeRT) Foundation Course delivered by Army Adventurous Training Group (AATG) at the various UK AT Centres/Wings. Moving forwards into the new Regular Commissioning Course (ADAIR) starting in May 24, all OCdts, including International OCdts, will conduct an ALeRT Course. These will be conducted in Wk 7 prior to Exercise LONG REACH.
OCdts plan and conduct AT Expeditions, all within the confines of the UK mainland, with a tight budget and at zero cost to the individual.
Circa 85 expeditions were undertaken in TY 23/24 and included Winter Mountaineering in Scotland, Sea kayaking in North Wales, Canoeing the Great Glen, conquering the Cuillin Ridge, mountain biking in the Black Mountains of South Wales... and many more.
RMAS FENCING
Mr D Truman
Mr Derek Truman was assigned to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as the Admin, Training Warrant Officer and Fencing Specialist in 1975, in those days fencing was very strong with a historical background both within the APTC and the Academy. Mr Truman has spent the past seventeen years as the Fencing coach at the Academy managing to reinstate fencing as a popular and integral part of the Academy sports programme.
In his sixty-one years associated with the sport of fencing, Mr Truman has seen it play a very important part within the RAPTC, producing many outstanding Corps Fencers.
During his time as coach at the Academy each term, it has been uplifting for the sport to see thirty Officer Cadets take fencing as their main sport, with a waiting list which shows its popularity.
Historically, fencing has played an important role at the Academy for many years. Unfortunately, like many other sports, in 2023 the sport was removed from the Academy Sports Programme due to changes within the Academy.
Fencing as a sport has played an extremely important part as a training skill for the development of military personnel over the years so I do look forward to seeing it back in the programme in the very near future.
I must give a big thank you to everyone in the RAPTC and at RMAS who has supported Fencing over the years.
