Iam now 18 months into my assignment with 5th Regiment Royal Artillery (5 Regt RA) and I can feel this year has
taken a noticeable shift towards upcoming Operational deployments. The Regiment has been tasked with providing support to Op ELGIN and Op TOSCA during 2024, with most of the Regiment assigned to support either one of these deployments. The training focus was started toward the back end of 2023 with the Regimental Exercise SWALE RAPTOR, where the focus was on getting troops out on the ground conducting low level training in a section competition format testing a range of military skills including a couple of PT stands. A Unit Health Fair was also added to the calendar prior to Christmas stand down, this focused on the four pillars of health. We had several external and internal companies come in to share their message and advice on how Service Personnel (SP) can improve certain aspects on their life. We also ensured we had an extra focus to ensure Regimental personnel were reminded of the additional dangers around Christmas time.
Although the Regimental focus has been to ensure we are fully trained and ready for the upcoming deployments, the Regiment has still managed to maintain its strong reputation for its sporting talent and participation across the North and Army level events. We finished second in the Army Sports Trophy and recently finished second in the Army Sport North Trophy and although gutted we didn’t manage to secure a first place, it shows how active we are to place in two separate competitions.
As a Regiment we have also managed to support sport across the North by not only competing, but also hosting some events. In the early months of 2024, we hosted the Army Sport North X Country event and a British Army Warrior Fitness event, both of which were a huge success.
