It has been a very busy year for 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery (1RHA) supporting Op CABRIT (Estonia) and
various Brigade level exercises. The PT department has played a pivotal role in ensuring the Regt is both physically and mentally prepared.
In Dec 23 we delivered the Commanding Officer’s Challenge. Under the instruction of the All Arms PTIs the troops conducted a quick familiarisation before competing in a head-to-head time trial on the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) obstacle course. The groups were split across all ranks with JNCOs taking the lead, developing their leadership and communication skills.
1RHA have had several successes on the sports field including football and tug of war.
The Regtl football team are currently in pole position of the Major Unit league, and we have had several Service Personnel (SP) represent the Army and England Tug of War Team. Recently the Army Tug of War Team were crowned Team of the Year at this year’s Army and UKAF Sports Awards.

In Feb 24 the PT Dept was tasked to deliver a ‘green PT’ serial for the annual Op TEAMWORK Day. I wanted to bring out the qualities pertinent to teamwork whilst also delivering an enjoyable and inclusive competition. The groups were split into 5 teams each led by an AAPTI and an IC (JNCO). Each group were tasked to transport their equipment (including log) to 5 different locations on Larkhill Garrison after deciphering a

riddle. At each location the teams had to successfully answer a variety of questions in order to move on quickly to the next. Although carrying the ‘dreaded log,’ this was an enjoyable competition for the Troops, emphasising the importance of teamwork and leadership.
Although the Regt has been dispersed throughout the year, they have still worked hard to conduct Adventurous Training. This has included a week in Val Thorens, France where several skiers obtained their Ski Foundation 1 (SF1) Qualification. The 1RHA Nordic Ski team also competed in Ex NORDIC GUNNER and Ex ALPINE TIGER at the Alpine Ski championships.
With B Bty deployed on Op CABRIT it has been great to see two of the Bty’s boxers compete in the NATO Boxing exhibition in Rakvere; the Regt is immensely proud of both the boxers and the coaches who delivered a gruelling training camp prior to the event.
As I come to the end of my tenure at 1RHA it has been an immensely enjoyable and rewarding period of my career. I’d like to thank all my AAPTIs I have served with and the Regt for their continued support.
