13 Signal Regiment (13 SR) is a unit like no other, with no less than 18 Cap Badges including being Tri-service.
Naturally that means there is a wide variety of personnel within the unit and for that I directed my focus over the last year.
Firstly, there was the creation of an area that the unit could have ownership of and thus deliver sessions tailored to its varied needs and people. I laboured through many a lunch hour and evening to turn what was once a QM’s store and offices into a training facility capable of delivering the Army Physical Training System (APTS). It even played host to some potted sports during Army Teamwork Day 24 when the players found varied ways to interpret the rules!
Professionally, the unit continues to extend its reach across the whole of Defence with involvement in many exercises both home and away, offering its cyber expertise and mentoring other units and people. It also hosts Exercise ARMY CYBER SPARTAN (Ex ACS) where, as a team, participants are tested against their technical abilities, the ability to react appropriately to scenario injects, complete Reports & Returns (R2) and contribute to the cyber intelligence picture.
No doubt Ex ACS kept people’s minds healthy and what better accompaniment to a healthy mind than a healthy body. So, to uphold the ‘variety’ theme, the unit have participated in some interesting CO’s Cup Competition events this year. Of note are go karting, a kayaking-running-mountain biking mix and also a patrol competition. All of which maintained the teamwork element.

That teamwork element continued as the unit submitted entries across many physically arduous events throughout the year. The unit have participated in Cataran Yomp, Nijmegen Marches, Trailwalker and Lanyard Trophy; the latter of which I got to experience the joy of – all 43.5 wet and windy miles of it!
Not forgetting of course, the individual talent within the unit. Top picks were AS(1) Sheppard, Tri-Service Cyclist and SSgt Peters, England Tug of War but there were also entries in table tennis, angling, motorcycle enduro and sailing; thus

demonstrating what a truly varied set a skills the unit possesses.
With this appetite for different sports, I organised and executed a Royal Corps of Signals Sports Insight Day which brought together 19 Royal Signals Corps Sport OICs and introduced them to new faces hoping to spawn interest and further push involvement in Sports across the Corps.
So concludes another year packed with a multitude of sports and activities that complements the multitude of personalities and experience encountered being a member of 13 Signal Regiment.
