One hundred years on – Eric Franklin looks back...
This month I am looking back 100 years to the first month of 1920 as recorded in local newspapers.
On Friday 9th January the County Court sat in town. Charles Cannell, a dentist practising in Thrapston and Kettering, sued A. W. Bolton and Son, Bridge Street for £9, the cost of supplying Mrs. Bolton with a set of teeth. She received them in November 1918 and after a small adjustment, appeared satisfied. When the plaintiff began pressing for payment some six months later, faults started to be reported and the debt was
still due in full. After hearing the claims and counter-claims, judgement with costs was awarded to Mr. Cannell.
The Guardians met on Tuesday 13th where they heard that there had still been no applications for the nursing vacancies. A temporary nurse had been obtained from a Northampton Nursing Home at a weekly cost of £3 3s.
Figures from the previous quarter showed that the average number of Workhouse inmates was 65, compared to 69 for the year before whilst there had been 400 casuals. The picture shows the vegetable garden at the front of the Workhouse (EDF collection).
