Stopford Sackville had offered the use of the estate’s ground a month earlier. A temporary committee was formed and an agreement was reached that the annual membership fee would be 5s.
On Saturday 17th Thrapston United beat Kettering Timson’s 5 - 0 in the Kettering and District Football Combination League. They went on to win the league that season (EDF collection).
A hastily arranged Police Court was held on Thursday 22nd, where a man of no fixed abode appeared charged with stealing one dried haddock, value 6d, from John Stubbs on the day before. He was remanded until the 27th whilst enquiries were made. The Court resumed on 27th to hear the case against the haddock thief. After hearing that the man had been out of trouble for fourteen years and had served with the Army Service Corps during the war, he was found guilty and given the option of a 10s fine or seven days hard labour. He thanked the Bench, but no indication is given as to his choice of sentence. The haddock is assumed to have been appropriately disposed of!
On Friday 30th, a Service of Dedication for the Memorial to the Fallen was held in the Parish Church, led by the Archdeacon
of Oakham, the Ven. W. G. Whittingham, rector of Glaston, Uppingham. The Memorial contained names in four panels with a
central panel inscribed with:
“In grateful memory of the men of
Thrapston who died for King and Country in the Great War, 1914 – 1918, the reredos and this panelling were erected, A.D. 1920.” The invitation to the service is shown. (This is the memorial in St James’ Church.)
Finally on Saturday 31st, Thrapston United had an easy win over Finedon United by
4 – 0.
The above stories were found in local newspaper archives held at Kettering Library during research into producing “Forget
me not” a miscellany of local news stories from between 1914 and 1921. The three sources were: Kettering Leader (published weekly on a Friday); Kettering Guardian (published weekly, also on a Friday) and; Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph (published six days a week).
