Contender for the worst job in the world
There has been a great deal of grounds main- tenance around the Academy. Decades of sec- ondary growth has been cleared from the woods around the upper and lower lakes, restoring the views from the colleges. Many of the statues have been renovated with, amongst others, the Prince Imperial restored to former glory.
Two familiar inhabitants of Sandhurst have been sent off for a long-overdue refurbishment. The 5.5-inch guns that, for generations, flanked the Churchill Hall have been replaced by a pair of 25 Pounder guns.
The Indian Army Memorial Room has also undergone a complete renovation in conjunc- tion with the National Army Museum. The room has enhanced lighting and a far wider range of artefacts covering the history of the British Indian Army. The opening ceremony was attended by Field Marshal Sir John Chapple, part of whose extensive collection of militaria is on display.
The Wish Stream outside the Churchill Hall has also been dredged for the first time in 15 years. Several tons of mud and silt have been removed to both improve the flow and also the quality of the water. As the scoops of mud are unloaded into a hopper, one extremely hardy contractor removes any large objects both natural, such as branches, and man-made, such as webbing pouches and rifle magazines, from the murky black torrent.
