8 Platoon
Lt Tom Thornhill
Since returning from Ex ASKARI STORM
8 Platoon have taken part in multiple Battalion activities. We have taken the lead on Ex MOUNTAIN EAGLE, with soldiers across the Battalion deploying on the mountain biking Adventurous Training
(AT) Expedition to Chamonix, Mont Blanc, France. The rest of the Platoon have been training hard on their drill for both Freedom of the City Parades in Worcester and Derby.
Ex MOUNTAIN EAGLE has been designed to provide 12 soldiers from across the Battalion with their Mountain Bike Foundation qualification over a two-week period. The soldiers have been trained on basic bike handling and technical skills. As well as; basic bike navigation, mountain hazards and weather
and how to lead groups
of up to 6 on trails. The
terrain in the Alps has
been extremely arduous
and has constantly
pushed the soldiers out
of their comfort zone.
But, despite this there
is no better place to
go mountain biking,
with the stunning views
and incredible weather,
all the soldiers have thoroughly enjoyed themselves and now want to take up the sport full time.
The rest of 8 Platoon had a couple of weeks well deserved leave and then went straight into preparations for the Freedom
Freedom of the City Parade Worcester, 26 Jun 22
of the City Parades. The troops were put through their paces for a couple of weeks before on
the parade square, to ensure that they were all at the correct standard. It was hard work but was worth it to see
how well the soldiers performed on the parades.
These past few months have been a great send off for 8 Platoon, by giving the soldiers a sense of pride for the regiment and when the soldiers move on to their new Platoons they will certainly remember how good their time was in 2 MERCIAN.
