Associations
Cornwall sadly lost The Rifles Officers’ Club Lunch at The Royal Cornwall show in June
and the Arundel Arms in September, as well as the Cornwall Association Reunion at The Keep in September. VE Day in May and VJ Day in August were commemorated with a very restricted short service at the War Memorial in Priory Park, Bodmin. The Light Infantry & RIFLES Bodmin Association had to cancel their Annual Paardeburg Dinner in March which will now hopefully be held in March 2021.
The Devonshire and Dorset Regimental Association, like so many others, were forced to cancel most of their events including
the annual Reunion in May which attracts members from all over the globe. The gathering is always a great opportunity for
old friends to meet up and roll back the years. Cancellations also included The Wagon Hill Lunch and West Country Dinner, with the most recent casualty being the Regimental London Dinner held at the Cavalry & Guards Club.
It has been for some, a lonely and distressing period but the D & D Regimental Association has ensured that no one has been left to fend for themselves, such is the family of the Devon and Dorset Regiment. It is hoped that by Easter life will be back to some normality and plans are in motion to organise the 2021 D & D Reunion Parade in Exeter on the 15th May.
Gillingham Branch of D & D’s and The
Rifles Association generously donated £750 to Care for Casualties in Oct 20. This adds to the roughly £20,000 raised to date. The Regimental Secretary was fulsome in his appreciation, particularly under the current circumstances. Gillingham Branch also donated £250 to towards the upkeep of the Lady Chapel in Sherborne Abbey.
Overview
Well, what a year that was! The chilly wind of COVID-19 swept through the South West region as much as it
did through the rest of the country, affecting so much of what we were all able to do as a Regiment. 6 RIFLES were busy with preopera- tional training and are now having
a very rewarding experience on OP TOSCA 33, the United Nations peace keeping mission in Cyprus. The Cadets have had their training hit hard, leading to much training being delivered online, and our antecedent Regimental Associations have
had most of their usual activities cancelled.
