THE COUNTY
REMEMBERS
By Captain Neil Bizzell
Cadets and staff were involved across the county in poppy collections and parades marking Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.
In the run up to the weekend cadets and staff supported collections and events raising money for the poppy appeal. Cadets worked with members of the Royal British Legion to sell poppies and collect donations from members of the public.
There were groups in action across the region including Endcliffe, Barton, Waltham and Grimsby detachments.
On Armistice Day cadets from Hillsborough, Greenhill and Rotherham Detachments were at Hillsborough stadium for the Sheffield Wednesday match against Millwall. Cadets and staff alongside the Sea Cadet Corps, Girls Voluntary Air Cadet Corps and veterans from the Royal British Legion took part in events to mark Armistice Day at the stadium.
The cadets and staff formed an honour guard around the pitch with some members also called upon to line the player tunnel and march out onto the pitch for the wreath laying and silence. They were then able stay and watch the match which the cadets enjoyed despite it not being a great result for the Wednesday fans amongst them.
On Remembrance Sunday the county were in action in towns and cities across the county footprint. There were large parades with our cadets forming only a small part of a large military contingent,
and small where the cadets provided the only representation of the Armed Forces.
In Bridlington the Commandant joined the party of dignitaries to take the salute, in many others, cadets and staff played key roles as standard bearers, wreath layers and in other ceremonial roles.
Regardless of the type of event cadets and staff represented the county well.
