As with all Global and Economic agencies, the AFC has had to ensure we adapt, evolve and develop our tactics, techniques and procedures, producing the best possible product (Junior Soldier) in preparation for Initial Trade Training (ITT).
We were expected to hit the ground running with the first LOCKDOWN fast approaching. The Fox Coy Team wargamed various methods of remote PD delivery, but we decided to embark on the Train Heroic app. This allowed us to deliver the CMS PD Programme virtually and remotely to over 1300 Junior Soldiers.
On reconstitution of Basic Training (late May 20), the PD Team, under the watchful, diligent eye of WO2 (QMSI) Graham Baily, had to dramatically change PD delivery to ensure COVID compliance. By no means an easy task in North Yorkshire, in the Winter and outside!
The COVID environment has taught us ‘adaptation,’ not just from a PD delivery perspective but from many aspects, including; RAPTCIs working out of lane, infrastructure, and contract delivery amendments. COVID testing, isolation and absence management surrounding PD delivery (training deficiencies). Too many examples to mention.
The RAPTCIs and AAPTIs I have had the pleasure to Command have been both impressive and committed, and for that, I thank you all.
One of the highlights of my tenure was the visit to the AFC of its Honorary Colonel, Capt Sir Tom Moore. To be part of that legacy is both humbling and emotional. His inspiration was evident to our Junior Soldiers.

AFC(H) COVID-19 Response – Isolation Ward

After an already turbulent 2020, at the start of October, I was asked to manage the ever-growing AFC Isolation Ward alongside my current role of Sports and Skills Co-Ordinator.
Due to being outside my remit, managing the Isolation ward proved very difficult but rewarding. Dealing with COVID swabs and been asked medical questions daily put my management skills and

patience to the test. Working with almost every department within the AFC and 81-bed spaces later, I had the ward up and running within a week.
Working seven days a week, CMT’s were drafted in to take swabs and observations of all the Junior Soldiers (JS) who showed signs and symptoms. Each JS had to stay in the ward until they had produced two negative tests or completed ten days in isolation after testing positive. All positive cases then had to follow the 28-day recovery pathway to facilitate them back into training.
