The soldiers that remained in barracks as the ROG were also some of the busiest, as whilst the rest of us were running around in any given field in the South West of England. They worked tirelessly to maintain the normal battle rhythm of the Regiment at home as well as support the deployed contingent. Their efforts were greatly appreciated.
A Return to Normality?
Detachment training resumed in full on our return from Exercise WESSEX STORM, initially within the MS sphere, which was greatly beneficial to our SNCOs and Juniors as well as me as a YO, and later in the form of a series of presentations delivered in pairs. The opportunity to stand up in front of an audience and brief enabled all participants to develop crucial leader- ship skills which they will without doubt use to their advantage in the near future.
Front and Centre
Post-summer leave, preparations for the SCOTS DG 50th anniversary were in full swing. After many hours marching up and down the square, eight members of the Detachment paraded through the streets of Edinburgh alongside the regiment, with an incred- ibly smart Lance Corporal Laura Keicher making an appearance front and centre in the ‘The Scotsman’. All those who took part relished the opportunity to march the iconic royal mile, before later retiring to their respective messes to enjoy a weekend of regimental celebration.
Just this last week, four members of the Detachment also completed the Scottish Half-Marathon; raising over £650.00 for ‘Scotty’s Little Soldiers’. A day of per- sonal bests, unforeseeable heat and mental grit left the RAO and I incredibly proud of our fellow runners for all of their effort and determination. Those that had been kind enough to donate to our cause also provided some much-needed motivation beyond the 9-mile mark!
On the Regiment’s most recent deployment on Exercise KHANJAR OMAN 21, four members of the Detachment took part in the 6-week exercise; slotting into non-G1 roles and supporting their cavalry peers wherever possible. This was in preparation for B Sqn’s deployment to Mali and marked the beginning of an arduous period of training; on which two of members of our Det will be deploying. The Detachment looks forward to a busy period of preparation and training both at home and overseas. Detachment specific train- ing will also continue; providing plenty of opportuni- ties to scrub up on fieldcraft, navigation and our core SPS skills. Team cohesion events are now gaining momentum in the light of lifting restrictions, with a no doubt obscenely competitive, and very much well- earned, afternoon of go-karting on the horizon. It’s been a challenging year for the Detachment, and they have met the mark with nothing less than absolute ver- satility and good humour; I very much look forward to their continued flourishment in the coming year.
