 AMS Inter Corp Netball
LCpl Nicolle Walton RADC
This year the Army Medical Services (AMS) netball team put up a dominant display in the Inter-Corps championships, which took place in Aldershot. The team met up the night before at ATR Pirbright for a training session, including a friendly against a local civilian team which got the hearts racing!
For a newbie to the netball scene, I had no idea what to expect on my arrival at Aldershot Garrison Sport Centre (AGSC)
but the atmosphere did not disappoint.
The buzz was contagious, to see so many cap badges in one place was brilliant and everyone was bumping into people that they knew from far and wide.
First port of call for the day was getting the Captains chosen and the teams in order. All levels are welcomed to the AMS netball team, so it is a tough job for the Captains deciding who to put in which positions,
and ensuring everyone had a chance to get on-court experience and, for some, their first competitive Army match.
It was great to see so many cap badges with not only a first and second team but three teams. Royal Signals, RLC and AGC had all managed to bring ‘developing’ teams with them. This is a brilliant chance for teams of people that are just starting out together to get out and get this experience against teams that may have had a few
more matches under their belts, and to watch and see how the game can be played. We all got to witness the wonder of Sgt Ellie Nawale, who plays for AGC, Army and the Fijian International team on court, and she was a sight to be seen for everyone.
After days of matches AMS Teams 1 and 2 fought hard for their overall positions. Team 1 especially drew the attention of
the crowds in winning match after match, coming second in the group stage, but just getting pipped to the post by the Royal Signals in a nail-biting final match. Team 2
left it all on the court coming an overall fifth. The shining star of the entire event was
Cpl Hannah Gapper who got player of the tournament which was the cherry on the cake.
If you are interested in getting involved please contact SSgt Zoe Beckett, ArmyMed-Trg-TDT-7 who is eager to get more RADC on board. No matter your level of skill, even if you have never played (like me) all it takes is an email: don’t hesitate.
P.S last year AMS netball went to Barbados...who knows where it will be in 2019!
