Exercise Dynamic Vagabond 2017 was a fantastic opportunity to experience the Royal Armoured Corps (RAC) and what is has to offer us as potential future officers.
Following the PT session on Saturday morning, we were tested in simulated mounted and dismounted combat using the VBS simulators. After this, we moved onto the Challenger 2 driving simulator where I had the opportunity to guide a simulated tank around a course. Next, we got to try our hand at the Mastiff 2 rollover simulator. Our task was to exit the vehicle, once
it had been turned 180° onto its roof, using the proper methods we had been shown with one member acting as a casualty.
From here, we viewed the 3 primary vehicles used by the RAC. The Jackal 2 (light cavalry), CVRT Scimitar 2 (armoured cavalry) and
Challenger 2 (armour). L stop of the day
was a visit to the Armoured Fighting Vehicle Gunnery
School (AFVGS)
Here we tried our
hands at both
Challenger 2 and
Warrior IFV Gunnery
simulators, achieving the top score as a team in both areas with OCdt Xiao achieving the highest individual scores of anyone competing. After the competitive phase of the day was complete, we enjoyed a black-tie dinner in Lulworth’s officers mess where a good time was had by all.
Despite not even having a full team at the start of the weekend Cambridge UOTC managed
to come 2nd out of the 14 UOTC’s competing,
a truly fantastic achievement! I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, as it has given me a real drive to progress through the CUOTC and onto Sandhurst and potentially onto a future with the Royal Armoured Corps.
